Can Europe shift from rule-maker to equal partner with developing countries in the fight against climate change? At our #LCAW2025 event, @E3G Brussels Executive Director @ManonDf observed that the intention is there, but implementation is lagging. What does a Trump win mean for COP29? The incoming climate denier will loom large. But before panic sets in, we should examine the lessons from history. The task at hand is for the rest of the world to show the value of multilateral climate cooperation. medium.com/@alex_scott_clima…

Deciding on a new Commission is the world’s hardest jigsaw puzzle🧩. @vonderleyen's key job is to create a structure fit to handle the EU’s problems (security, competitiveness, #climate, cost of living) & staff it with individuals able to drive consensus through. Key tests ⬇️
As President @vonderleyen prepares to announce the list of Commissioner nominees, E3G is asking key questions about what this means for Europe's climate and economic future. #EUGreenDeal #GreenTransition 👇 🧵(1/9)

Important to report this. And just as important to explain in real time what neofascists really mean. "Rejecting the flood of migrants" = drowning & deporting. "Punitive ecology" = more fossil fuels. "Confiscation of our sovereignty" = EU and NATO are optional.
⚠️Bardella has just announced that Rassemblement National will join the Patriots group tomorrow as he referred to "a large group that will have an influence on the balance of power in Europe, rejecting the flood of migrants, punitive ecology, and confiscation of our sovereignty"

The EU was just offered a respite to prove it can truly improve people’s quality of life, and their prospects. Phew! Politicians across Europe have a heavy responsibility to take decisions that will visibly benefit Europeans #legislatives2024

#EUCO'll next need to align on the EU’s #2040 climate target and an investment package to deliver on their commitment to serve Europeans #MFF. @antoniocostapm has solid experience and strong personal connections to find European compromises. Good pick for this job!

Our reaction @e3g. We will assess @vonderleyen political commitments against 6 benchmarks for a green, resilient, prosperous future. They'll need to be more ambitious and much more concrete than what we've seen this morning x.com/e3g/status/18066092022…

EU leaders signal stability in the green transition. Next steps: align on the 2040 climate target and invest in Europe’s prosperity. E3G shares six benchmarks to assess the commitments Von der Leyen will make in her upcoming political guidelines. 👉 bit.ly/4ezLqtw

Meloni is more isolated than her spin. In 🇮🇹, progressive parties won more votes and seats (35) than the hard-right of Meloni & Salvini (32). With 9 MEPs from Tajani’s center-right, the majority of 🇮🇹 chose a moderate, liberal and progressive 🇪🇺, which reflects the top jobs.
New: Meloni voted against kallas and Costa and abstained on VdL. Orban voted against VdL, for Costa and abstained on Kallas #EuCo

"Reopening files agreed after years of negotiations would disrupt confidence in Europe’s green trajectory, harming European industry and leading to postponed green investments." Exactly!
NEW🚨The EU elections did not kill the Green Deal. But they should mark a new beginning. Decarbonisation is the only route for Europe to resilience and competitiveness. The new EP has the responsibility to keep moving, and must avoid futile diversions. bruegel.org/first-glance/pro…

The #EPP’s main task will be to make industry competitive again - the threat from China and the US is not going away. Now all eyes are on the EPP leaders to create a coalition that makes it happen. They will want a comfortable position, so need a partner x.com/LindaCulture/status/17…

As votes are counted in the #EUelections2024, let’s do the math. The next European Commission president will need 361 votes to get approved. For now, EPP, S&D and Renew have 398 seats. With 13-15% of MEPs not following the group line, this is not comfortable. They need a partner

Despite shock in Paris & Berlin, the EU has what it needs to carry out its #greentransition. But policy stability will only be possible if @EPP makes alliances to its left with @RenewEurope @TheProgressives @GreensEFA on anything from climate, market rules, or social rights.
With the first national estimates out, this is how the new European Parliament looks. More updates on our live blog as results continue to be released: trib.al/IvArV1i More in-depth country breakdowns here: trib.al/kjyrRnp

Replying to @Mij_Europe
But VdL faces a very difficult reconfirmation vote in the European Parliament, where she needs an absolute majority of MEPs (361) to back her. I've attached a table of previous votes for Barrosso, Juncker and VdL 1.0 which highlights how tricky the arithmetic is going to prove 5/
