Obesity severity is incrementally associated with a broad range of cardiometabolic and renal disease burden, according to @PBRCNews researcher Dr Florina Corpodean, who explored the relationship through a cross-sectional study of data shorturl.at/tNi65
What a week at #ObesityWeek!
Incredibly proud of all our Pennington trainees @PBRCNews@LSU - but ESPECIALLY proud of Dr. Florina Corpodean @MdFlori for her Ethan Sims Finalist presentation!
Increasing obesity severity increases cardiometabolic disease burden!

As obesity severity increases, patients are less likely to have routine cancer screening. Great work using the @BRFSS !
As high BMI obesity increases in the USA, this is going to become an increasingly important issue.

Although #obesity increases #cancer risk, greater obesity severity was associated with reduced rates of screenings like mammography and colonoscopy, while screenings like FOBT increased with higher BMI levels. ja.ma/4gC3o04
ALT JAMA Network Open research letter titled "Obesity Severity and Cancer Screening in US Adults" by Florina Corpodean, Michael Kachmar, Shengping Yang, et al. Published September 17, 2025.
Here’s my story! I know many friends unable to get screenings and or treatments for cancer. Imagine knowing you have cancer but can’t get the surgery to remove it. obesityaction.org/resources/… Access Denied: Recommended Cancer Screening - Obesity Action Coalition
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) drives rising morbidity and mortality, yet remains underdiagnosed. A new Health Policy paper by @JVLazarus and colleagues calls for community-based diagnostics: shorturl.at/a0COQ#LiverTwitter#SLDthinktank
Study by @PBRCNews team that evaluated the use of different types of pre-surgery treatments, including multi-modal anti-obesity medications, GLP-1s & traditional diet & exercise finds pts who used multiple medications lost the most weight prior to surgery tinyurl.com/4s885dhv
….And Metabolic Surgery improves, or resolve, or prevents many other metabolic diseases, such as steatohepatitis, sleep apnea, hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease and cancer AND reduces mortality by nearly 50%. @IfsoSecretariat@ASMBS@NeilFlochMD@rvcohen
Thrilled to share that Hope Jackson, MD, will be the new Bariatric Surgery Program Director within the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery! Congratulations – we can’t wait to see the great things she does in this new role.

Shout out to @MdFlori for presenting at the @lsusurgerydept Research Day—important work on gut-brain vagal signaling in obesity and disparities in the fastest-growing obesity groups in the U.S. (BMI ≥50 & ≥60). Always exciting work @PBRCNews@metabolic_knife@PSchauerMD
BMI ≥60 surged >200% since 2001 - the fastest rise among all obesity categories. A growing clinical & public health challenge. Prevention, treatment, infrastructure - and less stigma - are urgently needed. @ASMBS@PBRCNews@metabolic_knife@MdFlori@PSchauerMD
