Today we remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, doubly appropriate to remember Lt. Frank Fazekas, our first archaeological recovery. He was shot down over #France OTD in 1944 flying a P-47 near Saint-Omer. He is now in @ArlingtonNatl@usabmc@dodpaa@UWMadison

A painting was created of the last moments of the “Shirley D” on 23 Dec 1944. We believe it was commissioned by a family member of one of the crew, but a copy was purchased and hangs in our offices at @UWMadison@dodpaa
A few days later, the AGRS was able to identify and account for 2 of the crewman who had remained onboard, but it wasn’t until over 75 years later, after an archaeological dig in the hot summer heat, that the final crewmember would be accounted for. 5/🧵
A witness reported that “Shirley D” took damage to the right engine, resulting in a massive fire. 4 crewman bailed out, while 3 remained onboard as it crashed into Belgian soil. 4/🧵
On December 23rd, Stevens was a gunner aboard a B-26F “Marauder” aircraft, nicknamed “Shirley D”, which was shot by anti-aircraft fire while returning from a bombing raid. 3/🧵
