In 1984, eight per cent of 13-year-olds reported “never or hardly ever” reading for pleasure. Today, that number is up to 29 per cent. How did this happen? It’s not based on the recent quality of children’s literature, as librarians and educators stress that keeping kids reading at a crucial developmental moment is more important than matters of taste.
