In July 2015, Adrian Hendricks (then 21-22) and accomplices placed rocks on the N2 highway (notoriously called the "Hell Run") to force motorists to stop. Warrant Officer Petrus Johannes Burger Holz, a 50-year-old experienced policeman attached to the Hawks’ commercial crime unit and driving to work, hit the rocks, damaging his vehicle. He stopped to inspect the damage. Hendricks approached, overpowered him, and stabbed him. Holz suffered fatal stab wounds and died from his injuries. This was part of a pattern. Two weeks earlier, motorist Jacques Loots was similarly forced to stop by rocks on the same stretch of road, stabbed in the collarbone (surviving the attack), and robbed. This cold-blooded tactic of sabotaging highways to ambush and attack innocent drivers, resulting in the death of a police officer doing his daily commute, is the kind of brazen lawlessness that terrorizes White South Africans every day. The ANC government's inability to secure roads and deliver real justice allows these predators to operate with deadly results. It's disgusting how these attacks continue, targeting hardworking citizens and police who try to hold the line.

Krystyna Trześniewska was one of more than 230,000 children and teenagers deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp complex during World War II. Born in Poland, she was imprisoned as a child after the German occupation of her country. Her prisoner number, visible on her camp uniform, was part of the Nazis' vast system of cataloging human beings as numbers rather than individuals. The overwhelming majority of children sent to Auschwitz did not survive. Of the approximately 1.3 million people deported to the camp complex between 1940 and 1945, at least 1.1 million were murdered. Children were especially vulnerable to starvation, disease, forced labor, medical experiments, and the gas chambers. Auschwitz was liberated by advancing Soviet forces on January 27, 1945. Among the roughly 7,000 prisoners found alive were about 700 children. Today, January 27 is observed internationally as Holocaust Remembrance Day. The Auschwitz camp archives contain more than 40,000 prisoner registration photographs. Most were taken between 1941 and 1944, but many were destroyed by the SS before liberation. He survived the war, but not its consequences. When the American Civil War was nearing its end, 23-year-old John Peter Bailey of Company F, 6th Ohio Cavalry, finally made his way home. His family had waited months for his return, hoping the worst was behind him. Instead, they watched as the hardships he had endured during captivity continued to take their toll. In October 1864, Bailey was captured and sent to Salisbury Prison in North Carolina. As the war dragged on, conditions inside many prison camps deteriorated dramatically. Overcrowding, shortages, and illness affected thousands of prisoners on both sides of the conflict. By the time Bailey was released and returned to Union authorities in early 1865, his health had been severely weakened. Doctors did what they could, but there was little hope of recovery. He was sent back to Newton Falls, Ohio, where he spent his final days surrounded by the people who loved him most. On March 31, 1865, only weeks before the war officially ended, John Peter Bailey passed away. What happened next left behind one of the most poignant visual reminders of the era. His family arranged for photographs to be taken with him after his death—one alongside his father, Reuben, and another with his mother, Rebecca. To modern eyes, these images may seem unusual. In the nineteenth century, however, photography was still a rare luxury, and many families had few opportunities to preserve the likeness of a loved one. These portraits were created not out of curiosity, but out of love, remembrance, and grief. Today, Bailey's story reminds us that the costs of war extended far beyond the battlefield. Many soldiers carried invisible burdens home with them, and countless families faced losses long after the fighting had ended. More than 160 years later, those final photographs remain a powerful testament to a family's determination to hold onto the memory of a son they were not ready to say goodbye to.
