#Alert Türkiye’s Rising Influence in Somalia as Western Leverage Declines Türkiye’s influence inside Somalia is growing steadily at a time when the role and political leverage of Western partners appear to be diminishing. As political tensions in Mogadishu intensify, sections of Somalia’s political opposition remain hesitant to align openly with Western actors seeking to mediate the crisis, particularly while Türkiye is already deeply and actively involved in the country’s political and security landscape. At the same time, the contributions of the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union to Somalia’s state-building process remain substantial, albeit increasingly constrained by limitations in political engagement and operational approach. Western partners continue to play an important role in supporting state institutions, infrastructure development, security sector reform, counterterrorism efforts, humanitarian assistance, and budgetary support. However, their comparatively cautious and measured involvement has created perceptions of reduced influence at a time when Türkiye’s presence continues to expand. In a recent interview, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (HSM) made clear the scale of Türkiye’s commitment, influence, and willingness to remain engaged in Somalia. His remarks reinforced a broader perception among political analysts that Ankara recognized strategic opportunities in Somalia long before many Western capitals did, or before they were prepared to act on them. Fifteen years ago, Türkiye made what many considered a high stakes gamble by investing in one of the world’s most fragile and unstable states. While many Western partners adopted a more risk conscious approach, Türkiye moved decisively, constructing its largest embassy in Africa in Mogadishu and establishing its most significant overseas military and security training base in Somalia. This long term investment strategy enabled Ankara to cultivate influence across multiple layers of Somali society and institutions. Today, Türkiye’s sustained security, political, and financial investments are translating into growing leverage on the ground. Having invested heavily over more than a decade, Ankara has little incentive to loosen its strategic foothold or reduce its role in shaping Somalia’s political and security trajectory. Regarding the ongoing dialogue between the federal government and the opposition, Türkiye appears focused on facilitating an outcome rooted in political understanding and consensus. Its apparent objective is to support a negotiated settlement capable of enabling broadly accepted elections while safeguarding economic stability and preventing disruption to the functioning of state institutions. At the same time, Ankara is likely seeking to preserve the confidence of both the government and opposition, avoiding the perception of aligning too closely with either side. #FGS #VillaSomalia #Turkiye #US #EU #UK #Politicalcrisis #Elections #Security #Counterterrorism #HOA #EA

#Alert Somalia’s Security and Political Stability Require Collective Responsibility and Compromise Somalia’s security and politics are interconnected, and the stability of both depends on how the international community engages with and responds to the country. Safeguarding the nation’s stability is a collective responsibility that must be protected by all. Reaching political consensus requires compromises to be made in the interest of the country and its people. The President no longer holds the same level of authority he had before 15 May 2026, while the opposition neither possesses the power nor the legitimacy to justify disrupting the country’s security and stability. #SecurityAlert Kenyan Security Forces Foil Al Shabaab Attack in Northeastern Kenya Kenyan security forces have foiled an Al Shabaab attack that was being planned against the Garissa and Mandera areas in northeastern Kenya. Al Shabaab had reportedly intended to seize police facilities and a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) base in the area, however security forces became aware of the plan and successfully prevented the attack. Al Shabaab attacks inside Kenya have significantly declined as Kenyan security agencies have strengthened security along the Somalia-Kenya border. Sadia Bajaaj has spent two months in detention without charge for peacefully expressing her views. At her first court appearance, the Prosecutor General failed to present sufficient evidence to indict her. After hearing objections from her lawyers, the judge found legal deficiencies in the prosecution’s case and returned it for correction. Now, according to credible reports, that judge has been replaced. Sadia is scheduled to appear before the Banadir Regional Court again on 23 June. The questions are simple: Why was the judge changed after rejecting the prosecution’s case? Why has Sadia remained in prison for two months without charge? This is a serious violation of Sadia’s rights, including her right to liberty, due process, and freedom of expression. Justice delayed is justice denied. Release Sadia and respect the rule of law. @UKinSomalia @EU_in_Somalia @US2SOMALIA @Swedan2030 @NLinSomalia @GermanyinSOM @UNHumanRights @UNTMIS_ @DKinSomalia
Today marks two months since Sadia was arbitrarily detained. Sadia remains in detention simply for expressing her views. Her case reflects a broader crackdown on activists, journalists, and others who speak out in Somalia. amnesty.org/en/documents/afr…

Leadership decapitation have been less productive in CT measures as argued by various academic scholars in this field. More emphasis needs to be placed on the root causes of the problem rather than focusing on the symptoms.
NISA & international partners seem to be breaking the back of Al Shabab’s financial & extortion apparatus. Top cadre of the militant groups financial leadership being eliminated one by one.

UPDATE: Omar Artan has arrived home to a hero’s welcome but I cannot but help think of all the other ways this story could have ended. Forget the version where the US does not deny him entry. But did FIFA have to drop him entirely?could he not have been reassigned to games in Mexico or Canada? Could FIFA who awarded President Trump the FIFA Peace Prize (yeah I know 🤯) not have at least appealed to the US to reverse this decision? Also worth noting that while FIFA says that it cannot control the policies of host nations it sure as hell can influence them. One of the conditions of Qatar hosting the previous World Cup in 2022 was permitting Israeli players & fans to enter - the two countries did not have diplomatic relations, and obviously still don’t. FIFA’s press release at the time alluded to Qatars commitment to FIFA hosting requirements. Seems FIFA’s requirements are selective.

This is so ludicrous. You'd be better off focusing on your ChatGPT-generated texts than speaking like this.
I evaluated the recent Sudan Quintet Mechanism meetings held in Addis Ababa (June 3–5, 2026), examined the regional power dynamics behind the peace initiative, and challenged its exclusionary political approach in light of realities on the ground. I also analyzed the links between Ethiopia, the UAE, and the RSF, and questioned whether this model could deliver genuine and lasting peace or whether it merely represents an effort to reshape Sudan's political landscape.

The most effective way for Somalis to express their pride & patriotism is to find common ground, mobilize & throw political hawkers who have tortured Somalia to death into the Indian Ocean. Doing so, would save future generations from this ordeal & give Somalia a chance to live!

#Breaking Somali Referee Omar Artan Receives Hero’s Welcome in Mogadishu After US Entry Denial Sparks Global Criticism Referee Omar Artan received a massive and emotional welcome in Mogadishu today, where crowds of citizens and senior government officials gathered at Aden Adde International Airport to show solidarity following the United States’ refusal to allow him entry. Among those present to receive him were some of the country’s top leaders, including Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, in what many viewed as a powerful public display of support for a national figure widely respected across Africa. Omar Artan, who was named Africa’s Best Referee of the Year this year, has become the focus of intense international attention after the US decision drew widespread criticism from global media outlets and international figures. Many observers described the move as deeply troubling and carrying troubling discriminatory undertones. Facing growing backlash and international scrutiny, US authorities later stated that the decision to deny Omar Artan entry was linked to security concerns, a justification that many believe came in response to mounting pressure and condemnation. Critics have argued that denying entry to a globally recognized referee, despite his possession of a valid visa and successful completion of immigration procedures before approval, undermines the spirit and integrity of international sporting events, particularly the FIFA World Cup, which is meant to promote unity, peace, and global cooperation rather than political division. #RefereeOmar #FIFA #Worldcup #CAF #US #Somalifederation #FGS

Pleased to welcome acclaimed Somali filmmaker, director & producer Ahmed Farah to the Embassy. Ahmed has distinguished himself as one of the creative leaders shaping a new chapter in Somali film & television. Through landmark productions such as Arday which gain Int’l recognition through its release on Netflix has demonstrated the power of storytelling to reflect our society, preserve our heritage and inspire future generations. I am particularly encouraged by his ongoing efforts to recreate the iconic Somali play “Hablayahow, Hadmaad Guursan Doontaan”, (Girls, when will you get married) ensuring that one of our most cherished cultural works is introduced to new young Somalia audiences and to the world, while preserving an important part of our national heritage. I commend Ahmed Farah for his dedication to promoting Somali culture, creativity and national identity through the arts. Our discussion highlighted the important role of film and storytelling in strengthening cultural understanding and showcasing #Somalia’s remarkable talent to the world. #ahmedriyo, #SomaliCinema #Africa #ArdayTVSeries

Another important political moment is unfolding in Southwest State today, where the staged “one person, one vote” process has culminated in an intriguing duel between former Southwest President Sharif Hassan Sheikh Ahmed Ahmed and FGS Speaker Adan Mohamed Nur. While there is broad consensus that the SW MPs (who will be voting for the SW president), did not come about through a genuine election rather a selection, there are credible reasons to anticipate a potential upset in the presidential vote itself. The outcome may not align with Federal Government expectations, as legislators are likely to be influenced by strong public sentiment and local political dynamics. The key variables now are who will control security at the voting venue and whether MPs will be permitted to enter the voting booth with their mobile phones. And whether the vote will be televised live. These issues will be critical to watch and ultimately affect the outcome of the contest. #Somalia
Southwest State is bracing for a volatile 72 hours that will redefine its relationship with Mogadishu. In Baidoa, regional MPs were sworn in before some of the candidates for the elections slated for tomorrow. Meanwhile, continued tensions and high likelihood of armed confrontation between SW forces and federal allied forces as the FGS is reportedly preparing a military move into the city. #Somalia

"Within Somali political discourse, accusations of hub ka dhigis maqaar-saar ah (superficial or selective disarmament) have become increasingly common. The concern is not disarmament in principle. The concern is asymmetry." @Abdi_Guled, could not have said it better. In Somalia, all issues always come down to this. What is good for the goose should be good for the gander. My experience in the security sector was that as long as you were fair and applied reforms uniformly, there was little to no pushback. It is a tightly knit society, and anything you try to conceal becomes an open secret. linkedin.com/pulse/analysis-…
