Very cool- I’ve always wondered about this question- especially with regards to energetic trade offs of different states, even sleep!
Interested in how cognition is fueled in the brain? We do a deep dive into the metabolic costs of cognition in our latest preprint. Thanks to @Anna_NeuroSci @DeeryHamish @DrBreaky doi.org/10.31219/osf.io/m5jz… @Mon_Bio_Imaging @MonashPsych @turnerinstitute @Psychology_UON

In Scientific American's (Feb 2024) article 'Minds Everywhere,' @drmichaellevin and others present several examples of bioelectricity serving as the integrating mechanism for functionality or agency across several things such as the Planarian, fly traps, slime mold, sensitive mimosa, and frog heart/skin cells or human lung cells, artificially assembled into a weird new thing. The article states that anesthesia even works to silence the functionality of the Venus fly trap and sensitive mimosa. It argues memory can be saved in a sort of 'state space' held ongoing by electrical signals, even in the absence of the Planarian's head/brain. Almost as though the bioelectric ongoing signal holds a fourier state space summing up experience or some other weird way of holding it. He also discusses 'subroutines' where applying the right voltage can induce growth of an eye at a weird place on a clawed frog tadpole, but the eye moves to the right spot as it transitions to a grown frog.

Congratulations @Melissa_Franch on this incredible Nature paper- can’t wait to see what’s next! ✨
After 2 rounds of applying to graduate programs and 6 years of experimental and computational effort, I am incredibly grateful to present my dissertation work and first, first-author paper on social learning in freely moving macaques, out today in Nature! nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

New results! A model built like the brain but NOT trained on neural data. Yet, it replicated neural (and behavioral) data. And it made novel predictions that were confirmed in data! New learning principles emerge from biomimetic computational primitives biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Exciting work from @TessyMThomas and @TandonLab exploring decoding speech components from distributed language network regions using sEEG electrodes.
Excited to share our new paper published in Journal of Neural Engineering! We demonstrate the feasibility of using sEEG to decode components of natural speech production. Thread below for more details [1/6] iopscience.iop.org/article/1…
