The abandoned Terrence building — the old New York State Psych Center — is finally coming down! Grateful to work with my colleagues and @GovKathyHochul to create more modern, accessible and affordable housing in #ROC. That’s 500 units for seniors, our workforce, individuals and families.

Welcome to the New York rental market, where the median asking rent hit $3,616 in the first quarter this year. To manage on a starting salary, some young professionals are turning to convents. 🔗 on.wsj.com/4ezUDUG

Great piece and policy agenda by @EconomicSecProj, starting with the title "Building Affordability" — because affordability fundamentally depends on building. Some highlights 🧵
1/ Today, ESP released Building Affordability, our new policy agenda on housing, which tackles the two causes of unaffordability: broken markets and broken incomes. Written by @chao_becky, @Mtkonczal, and @resnikoff, it shows how policy can expand supply while also directly protecting tenants.

An all-of-the-above approach is welcome to maximize the number of homes being built, and that includes expanding investment in both the private and public sector, as well as private-public partnerships:

Beyond the necessity of building more homes, there are many other components to improving housing affordability and experience in general — income policy, tenant protections, federal funding reform, etc. Read the full agenda for more 👇 x.com/EconomicSecProj/status…

2/ To address the spiraling housing crisis, the paper covers policy ideas from building codes to just cause evictions, all within a framework that can be adopted at multiple levels of government. Read it here: economicsecurityproject.org/…

New Yorkers need affordable homes. New Yorkers need great public libraries. So we're building both. Today, we took the next step with @BKLYNlibrary toward creating a brand-new library and more than 200 affordable homes at the New Utrecht Library site in Brooklyn. Because public land should serve the public.

This is great! We need housing everywhere. And the Council could more than double this by approving 460 permanently affordable units at Monitor Point this month.

All of this ⬇️⬇️⬇️
No issue better exemplifies why we need young people in office than housing -- millennials & gen Z are experiencing this crisis wildly differently than older folks. They understand in their bones the urgency of solving for it. They also understand: It's not just about cost of living -- it's about the way in which housing shortages affect everything else, from where you can work to your social life to your ability to plan for the future. Run for Something & RFS Civics has been aggressively & proactively recruiting renters to lead. We cannot let up now, especially at the local level.

In NY-12, one of the most contested House primaries of the year, every candidate goes on the record to support building more homes in the congressional district (one of the wealthiest in the country). More homes = better affordability; housing is a winning issue!
Do you support building new housing in District 12? All candidates raise their hands
