Weโ€™re proud to spotlight the Institute of Environmental Biotechnology at the Department of Agrobiotechnology, IFA Tulln in Lower Austria, from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). As a leading institution dedicated to the advancement of research and education in the field of materials and #bioremediation recycling and microbial metabolism, its primary mission is to improve the quality of life and protect our precious natural resources. ๐ŸŒฑ ๐๐Ž๐Š๐”โ€™๐ฌ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ๐ž ๐ข๐ง ๐Ž๐๐“๐ˆ๐Œ๐ˆ๐๐„๐‘ BOKU will develop an innovative stepwise approach via the combination of indirect, non-contact #bioleaching using biologically produced sulfuric acid followed by direct, contact bioleaching with ferrous iron oxidizing bacteria. This approach will enable the step-wise recovery of different metals from mine ores and tailings. To further enhance the environmental sustainability of the process, inorganic nutrients required for bacterial growth (i.e. ferrous iron, elemental sulphur and CO2) will be sourced from industrial waste streams such as steel making by-products, sulphur leftover from biogas de-sulfurization, and industrial off-gas. The different bioleaching mechanisms will first be tested on a lab-scale followed by upscaling of selected bioleaching processes together with OPTIMINER partners. #Mining #MineralProcessing #Biotechnology #CriticalRawMaterials

The EcoCastulum team carried out a field visit to SALORO SLU to identify the most representative areas for the development of a task focused on the planting of crops with phytoremediation capacity- that is, plants capable of absorbing heavy metals and helping purify both soil and water.
