Extremely happy to share our recent paper on two cloudburst events occurred over Chennai (30-31 August 2025) & Kolkata (22-23 September). The paper is unique as we attempted to identify the key processes and provide a conceptual framework for cloudburst sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Pleased to share our recent paper on analyses of suites of observations and model forecast for the extreme rainfall event during 9-10 July over Delhi NCR. Models could reasonably forecast with short lead but still struggle to get the amount & location. doi.org/10.1007/s00382-025-0…

India leads the world in hyper-local weather forecasting, outpacing the US, EU, and UK with precise alerts for storms, heatwaves, and cyclones. Farmers receive timely rainfall warnings, and emergency teams respond faster—turning disaster management from reactive to predictive. #11YearsOfSeva @PMOIndia @moesgoi @DrJitendraSingh @Indiametdept @PIB_India @DDNewslive @airnewsalerts

There was a continuous debate about how to make the ensemble prediction system products useful to operational forecasters. To address this question, @Snehlata Tirkey etal. published this paper where a derails is provided to decide on extreme event forecast rdcu.be/ewTAZ

I have immense respect for the women mentioned here—they have done outstanding research in their respective fields. That said, I would like to clarify that the forecast system being referred to was developed by a different team of scientists at IITM. The core development, over the years, was led by Drs. Mukhopadhyay, Prajeesh, Phani Murali, and Siddharth. The attached publication outlines the development process and the key contributors. gmd.copernicus.org/articles/…
The all-women-led team behind the first-of-its-kind, state-of-the-art indigenous “Bharat Forecast System” #BharatFS, launched by the India Meteorological Department under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. A brilliant reflection of PM Sh @narendramodi's push for greater women contribution in the making of #ViksitBharat. IITM New Study: Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) High-Resolution Global Forecast Model version 1: an attempt to resolve monsoon prediction deadlock Published in: Geoscientific Model Development, 18, 1879–1894, 2025 Authors: R. Phani Murali Krishna, Siddharth Kumar, A. Gopinathan Prajeesh, Peter Bechtold, Nils Wedi, Kumar Roy, Malay Ganai, B. Revanth Reddy, Snehlata Tirkey, Tanmoy Goswami, Radhika Kanase, Sahadat Sarkar, Medha Deshpande, and Parthasarathi Mukhopadhyay @PARTHAS_M Abstract The prediction of Indian monsoon rainfall variability, affecting a country with a population of billions, remained one of the major challenges of the numerical weather prediction community. While in recent years, there has been a significant improvement in the prediction of the synoptic-scale transients associated with the monsoon circulation, the intricacies of rainfall variability remained a challenge. Here, an attempt is made to develop a global model using a dynamic core of a cubic octahedral grid that provides a higher resolution of 6.5 km over the global tropics. This high-resolution model has been developed to resolve the monsoon convection. Reforecasts with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) High-Resolution Global Forecast Model (HGFM) have been run daily from June through September 2022. HGFM has a wavenumber truncation of 1534 in the cubic octahedral grid. The monsoon events have been predicted with a 10 d lead time. HGFM is compared to the operational Global Forecast System (GFS) T1534. While HGFM provides skills comparable to GFS, it shows better skills for higher precipitation thresholds. This model is currently being run in experimental mode and will be made operational. @Ravi_MoES @iitmpune @moesgoi @PIBEarthScience @PIBMumbai Read full: gmd.copernicus.org/articles/…

#IITM Pune Study: A recent publication titled "Performance of a novel NWP–AI hybrid lightning early warning system over Indian Subcontinent" details A two-autoencoder-based classification model (C2AE) which uses WRF forecast at 9 km resolution as input to give lightning warning 24 hours in advance. C2AE is trained over Maharashtra with a Bayes error rate of only 3%. C2AE performance over different thunderstorm-prone regions shows that C2AE is able to capture the spatial and temporal distribution of lightning activity relatively well. I'm convinced India will never be able to compete with the US and China in technology if we keep treating it as a spectacle. A bunch of influential folks are organising, Asia’s “largest AI event” in Mumbai later this month, and the speaker lineup has Bollywood celebrities, cricketers, and YouTube influencers. These are people who haven't written a single line of code in their lives. A country doesn't become a technology leader through celebrity endorsements or political speeches. India will never be a technology powerhouse if we parade technology as an accessory. Real AI innovation doesn’t come from celebrity panels—it comes from builders. PhDs, engineers, founders—people who write code, build models, and deploy systems at scale. The US and China didn’t lead in AI because of influencer summits. They did it through university labs, open-source contributions, and startup founders building from first principles. We need to build an ecosystem to listen and learn from builders. Technology isn’t a spectator sport. If India wants to lead, we must put real builders at the center of the conversation.
