🚨Beware of Misuse and Fraud in the Name of Student Loans and Grants 🚨
The Government of Canada and the Government of British Columbia provide student loans and grants to assist Canadian citizens and permanent residents. These loans are often interest-free, offer flexible repayment terms, and in some cases, a portion of the loan may even be forgiven under certain conditions.
While many advisors and consultants help people access these programs legitimately, some individuals are exploiting the system and misleading applicants for their own financial gain.
Many people mistakenly believe that the government is handing out money similar to COVID-19 relief benefits. Taking advantage of this misconception, some fraudsters promote student loans and grants as “free money” and keep a portion of the funds for themselves. In many cases, applicants are unaware of what has been submitted in their name and may only discover years later that they are responsible for repaying the loan.
Some applicants, tempted by the prospect of receiving money, may also agree to provide false information without fully understanding the serious consequences or the larger fraud being committed.
We became aware of this issue after it happened to some people known to us. Examples include:
-Student loans being obtained for individuals who are not actually studying.
-Enrolling people in private colleges and promising to complete assignments on their behalf.
-Falsely declaring married couples as divorced on applications.
-Increasing the number of children on an application—for example, listing five children instead of three and even adding fictitious names without the applicant’s knowledge.
-Applicants becoming concerned that their family members’ identification documents could be misused elsewhere.
These practices are clearly unethical and potentially illegal. Although many advisors provide genuine assistance, some are abusing these programs, not only defrauding the government but also putting applicants at financial and legal risk.
