A better way to tackle marginalization in the geosciences?

The application window for the GeoSPACE Summer 2024 field course is now open! Get those apps in for an accessible opportunity to practice field geology, remote sensing, volcanology, and planetary science in Arizona or virtually. @UFGeology @AccessibleGEOsites.google.com/ufl.edu/geo…
🚨 @uscensusbureau is changing the way disability data is collected which reduces national disability estimates from 14% to 8%! These changes will negatively impact disabled people and have moved forward without input from the disability community. 📢Action you can take below!
Really great to see @NatStephen and be a part of #GSA2023. I'm curious though, how many more would have had the opportunity to participate if the hybrid option were still available? Science must be accessible and inclusive. @AccessibleGEO
Is the decision really just about money? Targeted sponsorships and fundraising for access and inclusion...? @geosociety@theAGU@EuroGeosciences we would welcome a conversation.
#GSA2023 Please stop by the @AccessibleGEO booth when the exhibit halls are open! Also, please talk to me if you are interested in working with me on a research project to help support BIPOC geoscientists with disabilities.

"Our potential for success as deaf/HoH faculty members should not be measured by our ability to pass as hearing. By shifting general perceptions of what success looks like for disabled academics, we create more inclusive learning and research communities."

In her #Uncharted essay Jennifer L. Piatek nicely describes opportunities & costs of disability.
I love how @squawky points out that the glorification of independence in geoscience is at odds with the more inclusive interdependent culture of care within disabled communities.💯
This week I’m reading the last set of essays in #Uncharted: Captain of my Ship.

An exciting and remarkable funding opportunity from @NIH supporting research on health disparities impacting people with disabilities caused by #ableism. This is a long-overdue mind shift for biomedical researchers and a much-needed area of research! grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/…

Three months before his death, Robin Williams was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. But an autopsy later showed that he actually had Lewy body dementia - a devastating brain disease that shares characteristics with both Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Experts were stunned by how much the disease had ravaged his brain. One doctor said, 'This was about as devastating a form of Lewy body dementia as I had ever seen. It really amazed me that Robin could walk or move at all.'"
