Hi all! I teach intro geology and planetary science, and try to squeeze in my science in the spaces between the classes/meetings. Right now - Mars, craters, 3d printing. I'm a wheelchair user due to a spinal cord injury, so add adapting to life on wheels, too.

Never thought I’d see from home - aurora in central CT! (Folks in northern CT got some green; my view was only red).

Autocorrect has decided that "achondrite" should be "chondrite" and "maria" must be capitalized. Is there a "planetary scientist" setting that I can use to avoid having to train this thing?

The longest-operating spacecraft at Mars just completed its 100,000th orbit! Odyssey launched 23 years ago in 2001. In addition to relaying data for @NASA's Mars surface missions, it has mapped minerals and ice across the Martian surface and more. go.nasa.gov/3VIWnQT

.@NASAJuno spacecraft, using its JIRAM instrument, has captured detailed infrared images of volcanic activity on Jupiter's moon Io. These images reveal the widespread presence of lava lakes and provide new insights into Io's volcanic processes. Juno's close flybys have shown that about 3% of Io's surface is covered by molten lava lakes with a dynamic crust, constantly breaking and reforming. These observations enhance understanding of Io’s extreme volcanic nature and the mechanisms driving its eruptions. 👉 nature.com/articles/s43247-0…

I hope people truly understand the monument of this. I've watch @That_Astro_Chic start highlighting Black astronomers on her Twitter years ago. She founded @BlackInAstro. The leadership team for @BlackInAstro worked to develop #BlackSpaceWeek formally known as #BlackInAstroWeek
17 Jun 2024
As we celebrate the start of #BlackSpaceWeek, tune in now for a live event from @NMAAHC featuring @NASA_Astronauts Victor Glover, Jessica Watkins, and Yvonne Cagle: youtu.be/oq_OqySiJfQ

The program pairs undergraduate students with ongoing mission so they can see what a career in planetary science might look like. A lot is virtual, but also includes social events at their university #LPSC2024

This is a no due date program with a short proposal and no budget required initially. Only nonR1 institutions can apply, can participate for up to 5 years with funding for time and events like site visits. Again. Check the ROSES! #LPSC2024

Seriously, the survey results suggest higher rates of anxiety, stress, and depression in the planetary science community vs. the population as a whole. Thus, puppies and kittens. #LPSC2024

Respondents to this year’s survey identified not feeling valued by the community or not feeling “good enough” (imposter syndrome) as some of the biggest contributing factors to their feelings of anxiety and/or depression #LPSC2024
