It is a huge honour to be recognized by such an outstanding group of residents. In all honesty - THEY deserve an award. I am so grateful to be part of the most supportive program and department in all of emergency medicine @emergmedottawa
Congratulations to @emergmedottawa program director @ThurgurTox, the recipient of the PARO 2019 Lois H Ross Resident Advocate Award! Great recognition for a great PD’s tireless dedication to trainees. #meded

My retinae are still recovering...
Indeed.

Looking at COIs can feel like the movie Inception. So complicated and many layers to consider.

Yes, this is concerning and, as healthcare providers and consumers of the medical literature, we must pressure editors to address these issues. @SAEMEBM @TheSGEM @First10EM @SAEMEBM

Ah, but who are the authors of those studies? Industry employees or independent medical researchers? There is likely a subgroup difference. @BEEMcme @EddyLang1 @DrShawnQI @SMcLeod_SREMI @BlairBigham @SAEMEBM
24 Feb 2019
Industry sponsored studies are not necessarily wrong but it does make me more skeptical of the results. "strong and consistent evidence shows that industry-sponsored research tends to draw pro-industry conclusions”. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1253… @JeanneLenzer1

The top medical researchers in the world often advise industry on studies that benefit patients. This does not make them corrupt or in the pockets of industry. COI always required. @SAEMEBM @EddyLang1 @shawnkdowling @TChanMD @BlairBigham
22 Feb 2019
They are looking at the same evidence and come up with a different interpretation (just like us). I agree with my #EBM mentor to look beyond the authors' conclusions. The extensive COI from Emberson make me more skeptical of their "spin" @JeanneLenzer1 @reverendofdoubt

This is what academic debate is all about: progress.

I think we made some progress with our twitter discussion. Thank you Eddy for being part of the conversation. @NightShiftMD

The idea of an independent research body that designs and executes trials using industry funds has been around for awhile but never taken off.
The real long term answer is to completely remove financial COI from medical research Companies shouldn't be testing their own drugs or products

Wise words. Be an informed consumer of the medical literature: #BEEM
21 Feb 2019
I hope the message can be: read the primary literature, learn to do critical appraisal, be skeptical, reflect on the clinical application, consider your our experience and ask the patients’ what they value #EBM @SAEMEBM @EMSwami #batdoc

"it all depends" The interventions between the administration of plasma and the 30-day follow-up likely impacted on the outcome. @acemonline @BlairBigham @SAEMEBM @anxiousmedic @Brent_Thoma @WelsfordM
Last day at #SunBEEM19! Dr. Justin Yan asks: Does the prehospital administration of thawed plasma reduce mortality in trauma patients at risk for hemorrhagic shock? @ProfBEEM @shawnkdowling @DrShawnQI @TChanMD @InnovaEM @SAEMEBM @EddyLang1 @Brent_Thoma

“30% of tests, procedures & treatments associated with eight common medical tests are potentially unnecessary. The study confirms what Campbell and other doctors involved in the @ChooseWiselyCA campaign... have been saying for years.” thechronicleherald.ca/news/l…

The elderly will continue to represent a sizable proportion of our ED populations for the next 20 years; we need to learn how to best assess and manage them as we did with children. @SAEMEBM @AudreyATB @marcel_mond @TheSGEM @BEEMcme @M_Lin @WelsfordM
