Thank you to everyone who supported Soccer Aid for UNICEF 2026, helping raise £16.4 million for children worldwide, including support for lifesaving vaccines and healthcare in hard to reach communities. Every child deserves the chance to play, learn and grow up healthy. With continued commitment to immunisation, we can protect more children from preventable diseases like polio. Together, we can #EndPolioNow. 🔗socceraid.org.uk/ @SoccerAid @UNICEF_UK @Rotary @WHO #EndPolioNow#VaccinesWork #ForEveryChild #SoccerAid

Last month, more than 27 million children across #Afghanistan and #Pakistan received #polio vaccines. The progress we are seeing in both countries demonstrates what is possible through strong political commitment, dedicated frontline workers and sustained partner support. But the coming months will be critical. Success will depend on reaching missed children, sustaining high-quality implementation and maintaining the collective commitment of governments, communities, health workers and partners. Together, we can #EndPolio.

Did you know that at #WHA79... 64 countries took the floor ALL spoke on polio All were united in their message All said we must @EndPolioNow In a 🌍 world marked by conflict, mistrust and geopolitical division, this was an example of humanity with one clear voice. Countries from every region, every income level and across today's geopolitical divides came back to the same simple commitment. In the year 2026, no child anywhere should be paralysed by polio. That is the power of polio eradication. It is a purpose that brings people together. From Sabin in the USSR to Sabin Sundays. It has brought people together... and it continues to bring countries together around a clear, measurable, moral goal... ✅ reach every child ✅ sustain surveillance and laboratories ✅ respond rapidly to outbreaks ✅ protect mobile populations, refugees, reach every zero-dose child and access all including those in conflict-affected areas ✅ strengthen cross-border coordination ✅ systematically integrate polio assets into routine immunization, PHC and resilient health systems ✅ sustain financing until the job is done WHO's Eastern Mediterranean Region, the last region with endemic wild polio, was strongly represented with Libya, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Tunisia, Iran, Sudan, Morocco, Pakistan, Egypt, Qatar and UAE all taking the floor and highlighting their unwavering support for the push to end polio. Partners reinforced the same message. In global health, fragmentation is easy. But polio eradication reminds us that when the goal is clear, the purpose is shared, and the child is placed at the centre, unity is possible. The final mile is hard for a reason. But the world is still capable of walking that last mile together. @Rotary @KSRelief_EN @mbz_foundation @WHO_Polio @UNICEFpolio

#WHA79 delegates met this week against a backdrop of outbreaks, conflict, division, uncertainty and constrained resources. That is exactly the point of multilateralism: not to pretend the difficulties of our world are not there, but to address them together. That is not automatic. It is a choice. A choice to prioritise health. A choice to recognise that no country can address today’s health challenges alone. A choice to work through @WHO, not only as an institution, but as a shared platform for shared action. I thank you for that choice.

I was encouraged by the strong commitment shown by Member States during the polio session at #WHA79 and by our shared determination to finally consign #polio to history. Across the @WHOEMRO Region, even amidst conflict and complex emergencies, millions of children continue to be reached through vaccination efforts – thanks to the leadership of governments, the dedication of frontline health workers, and the support of donors and partners. We have come too far to stop now. Strong political leadership, sustainable financing and collective action will help ensure that no child, anywhere, is ever again paralysed by polio. #EndPolio @GatesMiddleEast | @EndPolioNow | @UNICEF | @Rotary | @gatesfoundation | @Gavi | @CDCgov | @MBZFoundation | @KSRelief_EN l @SaudiMOH

At #WHA79, I appreciated meeting with Ms Ayesha Raza Farooq @AyeshaRaza13, Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Polio in Pakistan 🇵🇰, to discuss the final mile towards polio eradication. Pakistan’s strong political commitment continues to be critical as the polio eradication programme moves closer to achieving its ultimate goal. Sustained leadership and financing to reach every child, especially in high-risk areas, will be essential to securing a polio-free future. @WHO remains committed to supporting Pakistan’s efforts to finish the job. @WHOPakistan | @nhsrcofficial | @PakUN_Geneva | @Pakfightspolio

At the polio session at #WHA79, I was encouraged by the strong commitment shown by Member States and partners to achieving and sustaining a polio-free world. The discussion reinforced that we have made significant progress, and that the remaining challenges are increasingly well defined: reaching missed and zero-dose children, strengthening routine immunization and surveillance systems, integrating polio efforts with broader health services, and ensuring sustainable financing to protect gains and sustain momentum. For our @WHOEMRO Region, even amidst conflict and complex emergencies, frontline health workers continue to demonstrate extraordinary dedication in reaching children with life-saving vaccines. We owe it to them, and to the children of this world, to match that commitment with strong political leadership, sustained investment and collective action. We know what needs to be done. Now we need to continue delivering on it. #EndPolio
