Deeply saddened by the passing of Ian Stirling. They say science is built on the shoulders of giants; Ian was one of mine. So many opportunities I've had were enabled by his pioneering work. His legacy will continue to influence research and conservation for generations.
Ian Stirling OC, FRSC (1941-2024). My friend, colleague, and mentor. He will be missed by so many.

Paper on state-switching step selection functions (HMM-SSFs) published in Movement Ecology (rdcu.be/ddHru)! We model behaviour-dependent movement and habitat selection, with some new extensions and inferential tools. Applied to 🦓. With @len_thom and @TheoMichelot

Great summary of our recent #MovementEcology paper on polar bear winter behaviour by @SaraGomez1326 !
1/7 A very interesting paper has recently been published in #MovementEcology by @RTogunov, @AugerMethe and colleagues about #polarbear #behaviour and foraging strategy! A lot of nice analysis on this fascinating species, have a look 🧵👇🏼

Very excited to publish the last chapter of my PhD on #polarbear #BehaviourEcology using #HMMs. Bears seem to change their behaviour and foraging strategy with the daily and seasonal cycles of their seal prey. #newpaper #movementecoolgy doi.org/10.1186/s40462-022-0…

New polar bear paper with @RTogunov, @AugerMethe & @environmentca explores foraging behavior: "bears spent approximately 47% of their time in the stationary drift state, 29% in olfactory search, and 24% in area‐restricted search." Open access: trebuchet.public.springernat…

Replying to @RTogunov
@RTogunov (left) successfully defended his PhD @ubc today examining the movement ecology of polar bears. An excellent defence & one of the best I've ever seen. Some extremely novel work. Congratulations to Ron & supervisor Associate Professor Dr. @AugerMethe!

Congratulations to *Dr.* Ron Togunuov @RTogunov, who successfully passed his dissertation defense! Somewhere, out there, Arctic marine mammals are celebrating your triumph!

New preprint with @AEDerocher, NJ Lunn, & @AugerMethe on #PolarBear behavioural budgets using HMMs and new method to correct for ice drift. Results suggest changes in behaviour may be linked to prey abundance; bears move more when seals are at the surface bit.ly/3ySnzCv

How useful are predictions if we don’t know how reliable they are? Yet: 96% of papers don’t show any uncertainty map alongside their predicted biodiversity map! This needs to change! Our new correspondence in @NatureEcoEvo: nature.com/articles/s41559-0… A few key points below👇(1/7)

Great news! Former MSc @NJKlappstein from @ualbertaScience got her MSc paper accepted with a new model applied to polar bear movement data that integrates energy. Look for "Energy-based step selection analysis: modelling the energetic drivers of animal movement and habitat use"

Polar bears use a lot of this crosswind movement when foraging. Polar bears track at 15° relative to wind when stationary on sea ice, approximately 90°relative to wind during olfactory search. oceans.ubc.ca/2021/08/02/q-a… @RTogunov
