After the Russians destroyed the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra during the WWII, it was never rebuilt until Ukraine regained its independence and began restoring its historical heritage.
The Dormition Cathedral was destroyed in 1941. It was mined and blown up by retreating Soviet NKVD forces after German troops occupied the city.
It remained in ruins for decades. Reconstruction finally began only in 1995 - 4 years after Ukraine regained its independence.
It took about 2 years to rebuild the exterior, which was completed in 1997. Interior restoration and foundation reinforcement took another 3 years, and the cathedral finally reopened in 2000.
That is why, when I was a kid, I remember visiting the partially destroyed Lavra with my family. I remember watching the reconstruction process. I remember seeing it being rebuilt.
My first Holy Communion took place there, at the Refectory Church of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Dormition Cathedral - the serious one, where you prepare by fasting, praying, and then confessing your sins. Before the age of 5, you are considered free of sin, and confession is not required.
I remember being very scared that I would have to confess my sins.
In this photo, you can see me, my brother, and my grandmother, who unfortunately is no longer with us today, standing in front of the reconstruction of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
You can also see a historical photo of the Lavra after it was destroyed by Russians in 1941, as well as the rebuilt Dormition Cathedral, where I had my first Holy Communion.
