2022 was one of the most challenging years for the Reader Union, but we also had so many wins. Here’s a brief recap of what we accomplished, and what we’re going to fight for in 2023! (1/6)

If you got paid today & can spare it, consider supporting our @SEIULocal1 comrades during their layoff 👇
When @SEIULocal1 laid off our members this month, they made them choose: severance pay, or a spot on the callback list. With only 2 weeks notice, most needed the severance. Donate to help our members pay their bills while we fight for their jobs! gofund.me/0bf13b09

Forever will stand in solidarity with my former union colleagues. They're real ones and deserve oh so much better!!!! ✊🏽🖤
Replying to @Reader_Union
But we’ve had real losses. Five union members left the Reader in 2022. All are journalists of color. Says one: “The Reader has an opportunity to foster new talent, but if we don’t retain the journalists of color we already have, that potential goes to waste.” (4/6)

I'll continue cheering for the Reader from the sidelines, and will especially continue supporting my comrades at the @Reader_Union who deserve better pay for keeping the spirit of the paper alive.

They continued, “Without the material support needed for my work to thrive, I have no option but to look elsewhere.” In 2023, our first priority must be supporting and retaining Reader journalists of color. (5/6)

Should say *solidarity* fund, rather than strike, but let’s show @HBHWorkers that we’ve got their back whatever they decide

While we’re at it, @howardbrownhc, the largest LQBTQ health care org in the Midwest, is threatening to axe 60 union jobs 🐀. Mgmt says it’s a needed financial decision, but @HBHWorkers say mgmt has yet to prove it 🐀🐀. Strike fund below 👇 🌈 👇
Our management is planning to lay off 60 union members right after New Years. These are people whose work impacts thousands, and management wants to throw that away. We are going to fight this with everything we have, but we need your help - please donate. gofundme.com/f/solidarity-fu…

Chicago is rich with podcasts & news sources (ahem) that aren’t the NYT. No Wordle for us today: it’s a pleasure to do the right thing & stand with @NYTimesGuild on the digital picket line.
We’re asking readers to not engage in any @nytimes platforms tomorrow and stand with us on the digital picket line! Read local news. Listen to public radio. Make something from a cookbook. Break your Wordle streak.

After 20 months of negotiations, enough is enough: Today, more than 1,000 @NYTimesGuild members pledged to walk out if @nytimes does not agree to a complete and fair contract by Dec. 8.

This is ugly, unnecessary, and goes against almost every tenet of journalism. Whenever Black people share their experiences with racism, there’s always some white person going out of their way to try to “prove” that it’s not the case. Truly disgusting.

With municipal races heating up, @Chicago_Reader is bringing you everything you need to know about the new police oversight commission. At its first meeting last month, a mostly skeptical audience had wise words for the new commissioners: chicagoreader.com/news-polit…
