Mandatory reading and surprising results from Michael Hall and colleagues - much better SNP/indel calling results from latest nanopore (beating illumina), and deep learning methods really doing well. Extremely thorough work biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Thanks for tweeting and providing some context to our preprint. The aim of the project was simply to find out which was the current best variant caller to use on latest ONT R10 simplex and duplex reads in bacteria. Clair3 came out on top.
As Zam says, this is impressive work by shows @nanopore consensus call accuracy being better than illumina (with a deep learning caller, in bacteria) - I have huge COI (long established consultant for @nanopore and shareholder) but wanted to put this in short long term context

Check out our lab's latest piece in The Conversation on new antibiotic development!
Scientists are racing to discover new antibiotics that can defeat these drug-resistant superbugs. The recently discovered antibiotic clovibactin renewed hope that we can get out of this antibiotic resistance crisis, writes @PidotLab (@TheDohertyInst). theconversation.com/could-ne…

Fantastic support from @CARB_X to develop #zinc based therapeutics to break resistance in #AMR #bacteria. This study, based on fundamental #biometals research, includes collaborators Tony Velkov, Mark Walker, and Maree Smith (not on Twitter). @UQ_News @IMBatUQ @BiointelectInfo
The @McDevitt_Lab are developing a world-first treatment for antibiotic-resistant community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) & have been awarded AUD$2.68M by @CARB_X to accelerate the pathway for development of this new therapeutic. doherty.edu.au/news-events/n… @UniMelbMDHS @TheRMH

We have an ingenious mechanism to detect living & growing microbes; our MR1 protein binds to microbial metabolites and displays these to T cells to rapidly kick off immunity. Here we share what we have learned about the MR1 microbe monitor rdcu.be/dnl69 @NatRevImmunol
