Meet Sukare: The Girl Who Waited to Breathe
Sukare is only 20. But she has carried the weight of a lifetime.
She was born in the outskirts of Boffa—the same small village where I was born and where I attended primary school many years ago. Back then, there was no electricity, no running water, no healthcare, and no safety net for families like ours.
Her mother died when she was just a baby. She was raised by her single father, a quiet, courageous man who carried the burden of her illness with quiet strength and unwavering love.
Then came rheumatic heart disease—a cruel, slow thief that nearly stole her future.
I first met Sukare during Mission #2. She was gasping for air, still full of hope, even as her heart failed her. She was on our long, heartbreaking waitlist. We saw her again on Mission #3, but once again, we had to say not yet—decisions that still haunt us.
I wasn’t sure we’d see her alive again.
But she survived. She waited. She held on.
And this July, on Mission #4, she finally received what she had waited years for: a new chance at life.
Thanks to our dedicated global team at Heart Attack Ethiopia Inc and the local team at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Sukare’s heart has been repaired.
She can finally breathe.
She can finally dream.
And one moment I will never forget:
Obse and I had the immense honor and joy of walking the hallway with her after surgery—no longer gasping, no longer waiting.
Just walking, smiling, alive.
Her father wept.
Because this isn’t just medicine.
This is hope in motion.
This is what one heart surgery can mean in #Ethiopia
One life saved—for us—is a thousand lives for those who’ve waited their whole lives for hope.
This is #Ethiopia.
This is why we return. Again and again.

Heart Attack Ethiopia brings modern cardiovascular care to those without access to even basic health care. Modern heart attack care can change these people’s lives.
“There is no better way to find yourself than to lose yourself in the service of others”…Ghandhi
Industrialized western nations must recognize that in many parts of the world people are deprived of the benefits of modern cardiovascular care. Heart Attack Ethiopia brings this care to people in need who have no resources. We have now performed the first TAVRs ever in Ethiopia.
I am extremely excited to share our publication on Jacc case reports in which we highlighted our experience of the novel wire assisted mitral commissurotomy in Patients with Rheumatic mitral stenosis.

Patients with severe aortic stenosis often need open heart surgery. But TAVR, short for transcatheter aortic valve replacement, is another, more minimally invasive option. Fareed Collado, MD, an interventional cardiologist at RUSH, explains how it works.
#TAVR in extra large AV annulus, poor surgical candidate. Bicuspid with R/L fusion, Diameter 34.3 mm, area 925 mm2, perimeter 108 . LVOT 984mm2. #TAVR with 29 #Sapien 3 5cc. Excellent final result with no PVL. @RushMedical
My most heartfelt congratulations to Robert Gerszten MD, chief of cardiology at Beth Israel Hospital and, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School; winner of this year’s AHA Paul Dudley White award for outstanding contributions to cardiovascular research and education.
From Beth Israel/ Harvard Medical School Structural Heart Disease Program we present a 79 Y/O with H/O VHD. Can you recognize all the devices in his heart?
