What the EU should have proposed to the UK in order to have made a meaningful negotiation approach on the Youth Mobility visa. And what the UK should carefully consider to ensure it can stay an innovative country. Young minds are the biggest motor of innovation after all!
*New briefing* from @STWolpers & @jujulemons 🇬🇧 should expand its Youth Mobility Scheme to compete in the global race for talent. Talent creates growth: 1 in 5 FTSE 100 companies were founded by migrants, and 39% of the UK's fastest growing startups have migrant founders.

The next government should read this from @STWolpers & @jujulemons Expansion of YMS is popular with the British public, the EU wants it, and our economy needs it. What's not to like? 👇👇👇

Deeply grateful to @BoellStiftung not only for drawing more attention to @mashagessen's brilliant and humane @NewYorker essay but also for proving, in its reaction to the piece, the very points that Masha so powerfully makes. newyorker.com/news/the-weeke…

🚨🔥 🥳We’ve recently finished collecting the 1st wave of what we hope will be a helpful panel data resource, which we’ve uncreatively called the Pacific Labour Mobility Survey. Here is a quick thread, as we have just released a report with all the main descriptive findings. 1/N

One final thought: Fact-checks after the fact are inherently limited. “A lie is halfway round the world before the truth has got its boots on”. Forensic, investigative, truth-seeking work should be a proactive part of breaking news coverage, not a reactive add-on afterwards.

Some quick thoughts on why large parts of the mainstream media keep slipping up on Gaza/Israel (and why it was the same at times with Covid): The main reason is a failure to keep pace with modern news gathering techniques, but there’s more.

Pretty straightforward @WSJ editorial today. Birth rates are going down, unemployment is going down, and labor shortages are going up. "Someone needs to make the case that admitting foreign workers is good for Americans." wsj.com/articles/americas-ch…

It's strange how Suella Braverman says here that 4,000 people have received Windrush compensation when the actual figure is only 1,681 - much lower. The press office says she made a mistake But this was the most important figure for the interview itv.com/news/2023-06-21/brav…
