Long before becoming the District of Columbia, these lands were home to indigenous peoples.
Native American artifacts have been found all over DC, including Rock Creek Park, Anacostia, the Arboretum, Capitol Hill, and even the White House.
It is a powerful reminder that indigenous peoples have inhabited this area for thousands of years — a history, culture, and presence that endures today.
On Indigenous Peoples Day, we honor the Piscataway, the Nacotchtank (Anacostans), and all who first called this place home.
