Ms Asiya Hendricks, Deputy Director for MST Curriculum Innovation and E-Learning at the DBE, delivered a presentation on Numeracy Implementation Insights and Curriculum Alignment. She highlighted ongoing challenges faced by learners in developing numeracy skills, noting that many continue to struggle with basic mathematical concepts. Ms Hendricks also emphasised the crucial role of teacher support and continuous curriculum updates, stating that improving the quality of education relies on empowering teachers with the tools and guidance needed to strengthen learners’ understanding. Following the presentations by Ms Hendrick, Ms Cheryl Weston and Mr Enoch Rabotapi from the DBE, led a discussion on Teacher Development, Professional Learning, and Support Structures. Mr Rabotapi emphasised the importance of strengthening professional support systems to empower teachers and enhance classroom effectiveness. Ms Weston addressed the challenges of teacher retention, noting that many educators leave the profession for better opportunities, including positions abroad. She further highlighted the uneven distribution of teachers across schools, suggesting that educators from overcrowded institutions could be redeployed to schools in need of qualified and relevant teaching staff, a step towards promoting equity and balance within the education system. #EducationZA #GovZAUpdates #PartnersInEducation
