Goodbye NYC, bonjour Paris. After 10 years at Columbia University, a very exciting change on both a personal and professional level. NYC will always have a dear place in my ❤️ as do colleagues who I will surely miss, but boy am I excited for what’s ahead!

Wait... What!? Plants with Huntington's disease??? We introduced the toxic fragment of the mutant Huntingtin protein in Arabidopsis plants. (1/12) biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Are you really doing omics if you’re not doing multiomics?

@NeckerInem is delighted to welcome Dr. Nicolas Venteclef @VenteclefNicol1, an internationally renowned expert in immunometabolism working on macrophages and type 2 diabetes, as new Group Leader, bringing considerable strength to our fundamental and translational activities.

You know I’m huge fan, but this is truly inspired!
There's still lots to learn about chromatin complexity due to diversification of histone genes. A phylogenomic analysis of histone H2B genes led by @PravruthaRaman discovers 2 novel histones in mammals (incl humans), one of which is >400 million years old! biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

I really enjoyed reading these two papers from the labs of @jkagan1 and @ClareBryant13. Congratulations to everyone involved! Folks interested in innate immunity, synthetic biology, evolution, or just good science, these are sure to become classics. immunology.sciencemag.org/co…

Niiiiice!
Well, this has been a long-awaited day- the first paper on our multicellularity Long Term Evolution Experiment (LTEE) is on the BioRxiv. Ever wonder how simple multicellular organisms evolve to become larger and more complex over thousands of gens? 1/35 biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

That we only vaccinated 292,552 Americans today, having been able to hit 800,000 Thursday (7 Jan), speaks to the lack of any 24/7 plan or ability to execute. Emergencies don't take off weekends.

I’m all for SciComm, but the explosion of discussion on Twitter about virus evolution and viral variants has devolved into a complete shit show, largely because of non-experts with blue checkmarks & large followings tweeting/publishing hyperbolic speculations. Needs to stop!

For anyone who missed this paper, @gorkalasso BarryHonig & @ShapiraLab use protein structure similarity to scan for molecular mimicry between host & viral proteins. Several interesting candidates identified in pox, herpes, paramyxo, and coronaviruses. doi.org/10.1016/j.cels.2020.…

More awesome work from @mason_lab. Modern technology meets Jules Vern. Seriously, who wouldn’t find this super cool!? Beam me up Scotty.

At what point does blatant endangerment of human health, promotion of crackpot science, and willful obstruction of efforts to limit future deaths fall under crimes against humanity? @IntlCrimCourt @HagueInstitute
When the WH was asked this morning why they weren’t sharing Covid response info with the Biden team their answer was why should we. Not disputing Biden won, just saying they were under no obligation to help them. Let that sink in.

Viruses frequently mimic host proteins (e.g. due to horizontal gene transfer). This paper uses protein structure similarity to scan for mimicry, and points to mimicry as a pervasive strategy employed by viruses. cell.com/cell-systems/fullte…
