Fun 🤩 here at @americangeophysicalunion in the Big Easy to bump into old colleagues like Allan Bacon with @useyardstick. Great talk on importance of quantifying “remeasurement error”

We shall measure stellar brightness logarithmically, and it will be called the "magnitude." - Sir, will that logarithm be base 10, or based on Napier's constant? Neither. It shall be of the base of the fifth root of one hundred.

"bioactive synergism" ftw... how come there aren't Golden Raspberry awards for this pablum
You can’t bio-product your way to soil health—products don’t improve soil’s physical conditions, but proven practices do. Before spending your money on an unproven product, try a time-tested practice to build soil. My latest: csanr.wsu.edu/?p=22836

I wrote about the power of climate feedbacks for @NewYorker. The piece came out today, just as #Hurricane Milton became a Category 5 storm. newyorker.com/magazine/2024/…

or we reframe slightly and starting asking "how much of my SOM is longer-lived vs shorter-lived"?? i know, good luck there...
Identifying optimal organic matter levels is challenging because, with management, ag soils can function with low SOM levels. Choosing an optimal level of soil organic matter by comparing it to similar soils/climate/land cover just sidesteps the question "how much is enough?"
