The newest episode of Inevitable & Obvious is live, with Ross Centers and Morgan Goodwin of the @SpaceSRM Planetary Sunshade Institute. Last month I attended the first-ever Planetary Sunshade Workshop in Nottingham, and I learned a lot about where this field is right now. I came away convinced that building a sunshade is genuinely feasible. Ross and Morgan sit at the center of this field, and across the episode they work through what it would take to build a sunshade, how you'd do the lunar metallurgy needed to manufacture large structures in space, and the argument that SpaceX is fundamentally a Dyson Swarm company, whose industrial base is also exactly what a sunshade for Earth would require. From there we get into why even fully renewable energy hits a planetary heat limit, how you'd make forty-kilometer solar sails out of moon dust, and who governs the climate once we can steer it. This was super fun, and easily the most hardcore, in-the-weeds episode of the show so far. If you want a glimpse of where all this is heading over the next two decades, don't miss this one! Link to the episode below. 👇

We went deep - this might be the most comprehensive interview yet. Dyson swarm, lunar mining, governance - it’s all here. @paulgambill interviews @rosscenters and @mogmaar, getting to the heart of what a sunshade implies about humanity and space. inevitableandobvious.com/p/a…

Great to have you there!
I went to the first-ever Planetary Sunshade Workshop, and I went in wondering if this is a 2040s thing or a 22nd-century thing. The engineering is early, but the economics look different than they did a few years ago. Space industrialization is building the infrastructure a sunshade would need. If you're already mining lunar aluminum for commercial purposes, the sunshade stops being a standalone trillion-dollar climate project and becomes a climate application running on that infrastructure. I wrote up what I learned. Article linked below 👇

New name, new logo, and an update to our theory of change: 1) sunlight reflection will be necessary 2) there are 2 planetary scale reflection methods: SAI and sunshades 3) these are complimentary 4) space industry is putting sunshades in reach 5) public benefit research now

Because the climate is going to keep doing its thing
Lurking below the surface in the equatorial Pacific is possibly the most impressive blob of above average ocean temperatures we've ever recorded since we've had the ability to measure this stuff. When that enormous concentration of bath water reaches the surface over the coming weeks and months, it's going to release devastating consequences around the globe throughout the second half of the year. Get ready for severe droughts in parts of South America, Africa, and Australia, devastating monsoons in southern China, and a roaring southern jet all winter long in North America. When you combine this with the fertilizer crisis bubbling as a byproduct of current global events, there's going to be crop failure on a level most of us have never seen during the closing months of 2026. Hard to see how we avoid widespread deadly famines across multiple stretches of the planet at this point.

Really enjoyed our conversation!
I spoke to @SpaceSRM this week and now I am way more hyped about how cool this could be. Gigantic space mirror fans with 40km long blades and you’d need thousands of them. 😱 No wonder everyone thinks it’s sci-fi. At the same time, all you need is financial incentive alignment and human ingenuity would take care of the rest. I’m now bullish space-based SRM in the multi-decade timeframe

An important look into the discussion on geoengineering and the importance of rigorous discussion.
Hmm, I returned from the backcountry to find NY Times put a story about me on front page of Sunday's paper. My comment here: davidkeith.earth/comment-on-… Feedback and questions are welcome. 1/3
