5/5 - #ghrelin acts on the #hypothalamus 🧠to regulate #hunger 🍔 #metabolism 🔥; can we strengthen this to benefit #PALS. Thank you to @MND_RIA @UQMedicine, and @FightMND and @NIHfor supporting @NgoShyuan @ZigmanLab. A BIG thank you to the #PALS for their time and contributions

4/5 – #PALS with higher #ghrelin were more likely to have lower #BMI & #FatMass, suggesting they were at greater risk of #malnutrition. They also had greater risk of earlier death; are benefits of ghrelin lost, and can we target this to improve outcomes? More research 🔬needed.

3/5 – When comparing findings with functional decline, lower #ghrelin and greater #LEAP2ghrelin was associated with lower physical capacity; #ghrelin does more than regulate appetite. It can be neuroprotective 🧠 and support muscle 💪 function. Are these benefits lost in #ALS?

2/5 - Seeking to improve understanding of why some #PALS lose appetite, we show that postprandial hunger hormone #ghrelin is lower in ALS, and a big increase in #LEAP2ghrelin, suggesting #LEAP2 might block #ghrelin actions. @ZigmanLab was instrumental in making sense of this.

Collaborative project between @UQ_News and @UMCUtrecht showing that wear location will impact #actigraphy outcomes in #ALS #MND Led by #PhD student @HoldomCory with insights from @rpavaneijk. Thank you for support from @HondaFoundation @WesleyResearch @MNDFoundation @FightMND
I'm excited to share our paper following from @rpavaneijk's work on the use of passive actigraphy for monitoring #ALS #MND function outside the clinic. There is clearly a lot of opportunity to expand the potential of this technology. @Steyn_Lab @Ngo_Lab: doi.org/10.1007/s00415-023-1…

Does hypothalamus size matter in #ALS? Patients with low hypothalamic volume with low BMI tend to lose fat mass and have increased risk for earlier death. Thank you to the #PALS and their friends and family who contributed to this work. doi.org/10.1111/ene.15589🧠@EANeurology (1/4)
