My dad’s experience of dying - a thread of edited excerpts (without the medical jargon!) from my 2020 response here: bmj.com/content/368/bmj.m646… He desperately wanted the opportunity to choose to die on his terms - I promised to share his story in support of #AssistedDying ❤️ 1/14

Really pleased - the right outcome and brings @rcgp in line with @TheBMA and other major Royal Colleges 👏
RCGP shifts to position of neither supporting nor opposing assisted dying. rcgp.org.uk/News/rcgp-positi…

It’s important that GP colleagues engage with this new survey. My strong view is that College should - like nearly all others & @TheBMA - be neutral on the topic of a change in the law on #AssistedDying. There’s no other way to accurately reflect plurality of views 🧵 below 👇

Also critical @rcgp are clear *in advance* of what criteria will be used to assess the result. Last time we had: ❌ 47% oppose ✅ 40% support ❔ 11% neutral Yet somehow this was interpreted as a mandate to remain opposed… Lack of clear majority should = neutrality

My experience as a GP and as a son & why I support #AssistedDying

The Royal College of GPs has voted to consult with members as to what its position on the legalisation of assisted dying should be. The College’s current position, adopted by RCGP Council in 2020 following a member consultation in 2019, is to oppose a change in the law on assisted dying. By far best reporting on abhorrent outbursts & ‘policy’ from @POTUS found on @Channel4News - @siobhankennedy4 is the only DC reporter doorstepping Republican Senators/US Reps in Capitol forcing them to face the insanity spouted by the man they’ve capitulated to & anointed King…

As is sadly often the case, the replies to this are evidence in themselves that the campaign must continue. It is so tiring. I often wonder what it would like to be a human that could just expect to be respected by others, without having to worry.

Today is the start of LGBTQ History Month. #LGBTplusHM25 Far too many LGBTQ doctors and medical students still face discrimination. As your trade union, we are here to support you. THREAD

Norovirus is a cool virus because it doesn't have a lipid envelope. That means it’s incredibly stable in the environment. So in addition to causing violent vomiting, diarrhea, & stomach cramping, it can be shed in stool for 2 weeks, AND hand sanitizers are ineffective. FUN! 1/

Perhaps a single transferable vote is the only option but ultimately when 4 in 10 GPs surveyed felt @rcgp should support a change in the law it makes no sense to me that the position of the College was one of opposition as opposed to neutrality

The BMA is neutral on the issue of #AssistedDying – meaning we do not support or oppose a change in the law. But we have continued to discuss a number of key issues to be addressed if the law is to change. Read our full response to today's news. bma.org.uk/bma-media-centre/…

Hopeful @UKParliament decision to vote in favour of #AssistedDying at this stage will be replicated in support for @Liam4Orkney Bill before @ScotParl - already the most consulted upon Bill ever in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 with significant majority support amongst the public
