George Pólya, the renowned Hungarian–American mathematician and author of How to Solve It, encouraged people not only to solve problems formally but also to develop an intuitive understanding of them. Sometimes seeing a phenomenon makes the science behind it easier to appreciate. That idea inspired this little experiment. When testing a bituminous binder using Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), the movement of the upper spindle is normally far too small to observe directly. In these videos, we pushed our DSR beyond its usual operating conditions to make the loading mechanism visible. The test temperature was set at the binder softening point 5°C, where the material behaves predominantly as a viscous fluid and offers little resistance to deformation. As the spindle oscillates, a small amount of binder sitting beyond the plate gap is progressively displaced. At each half-cycle, a tiny amount of material is deposited at a slightly different angular position, gradually creating a visible pattern that reflects the oscillatory loading waveform. A small visual detail but one that gives an unusual glimpse into what normally remains invisible during DSR testing. Following on from our previous post, where we pushed the DSR into intentionally exaggerated conditions to highlight its behaviour, this video takes a more representative look at how the binder performs under high frequency and low strain. In this case, we are operating closer to conditions relevant to in-service performance: - Strain is maintained at 1%, ensuring we remain within the linear viscoelastic region - Frequency is increased (30%), simulating more rapid loading conditions, analogous to a busy road with continuously moving traffic Our NETZSCH Kinexus Prime Lab DSR is capable of replicating a wide range of conditions that a binder may experience throughout its service life, from temperatures as low as -5 °C up to 150 °C, across extremely small strains to highly demanding deformation regimes, and over a broad range of loading frequencies.
