The country’s most popular tourist destinations seem to be becoming victims of their own success. Every week, social media is filled with images of traffic jams and overcrowded hill stations. Holidays that were meant to be relaxing end up testing people’s patience. Those places will have to find ways to cope with the surge in visitors. But India is vast. And there is no shortage of beautiful destinations that remain relatively undiscovered. So do share your hidden gems with me and I’ll try to amplify them here. To start with: Valparai. In May, the vegetation in the hills nearby become dry. We saw a big lightning flash and then heard the loud thunder. The hills caught fire. It was burning all night and this picture was taken around 3 am.

Driving through Papanasam, Neduntheru, Ayyampettai stretch and seeing no locals for temples like Appakudathaan, Anbil to take care of the temples, we have to realize that it was our immediate previous gen and grandfathers who made the mistake of leaving our ancestral villages. No point blaming others for what we did to ourselves, our temples and our sampradayams. Rushing to Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi Mumbai and abroad for white collar jobs abandoning our temples. It is on us.
