The pivot from "bring down the cost of living!" to "actually, it's patriotic to pay $10 for an avocado" happened so fast, it's almost as if they were planning it all along.

David Kelly of @JPMorganAM: "The trouble with tariffs, to be succinct, is that they raise prices, slow economic growth, cut profits, increase unemployment, worsen inequality, diminish productivity and increase global tensions. Other than that, they’re fine."

Andy is a fantastic meteorologist who has worked at NHC for years, and was laid off this week because of this stupid shit. I can’t believe it, but our weather industry is in worse hands without his experience. He is helping improve hurricane forecasts. Andy, we support you!!
Had to go to NHC this morning to drop off my work computer and CAC to be sent back to EMC. It was a sad moment that hit me with the reality of the injustice that has happened to me, many others in NOAA and elsewhere, and ultimately the American people. On a happier note I also got to go talk to a middle school science class this morning about weather and hurricanes. That's always a lot of fun and a great way to start building a new generation of leaders in our field :)

A new documentary on Katharine Graham reminds us of what it was like to have a person of principle and courage own the @washingtonpost. As a 20-year veteran of the Post, working for Mrs. Graham (she was always Mrs. Graham) was the honor of a lifetime. amazon.com/Becoming-Katharin…

I’d like to be the first to congratulate President Trump on overseeing the 4 greatest drops in the stock market in the past 50 years. This level of commitment to failure is uncommon in a leader. MAGA!

Beyond parody — after taking a blowtorch to the federal government the Trump administration is now in court saying they can’t obey court orders because their staff has been cut 🤔

(📢) Musk just gave the game away in his interview with Rogan. He said that it's because of Social Security that "people are living longer than expected," which coupled with a lower U.S. birth rate creates a situation he finds intolerable. He is coming for your Social Security.

The AMS stands in support of federal employees impacted by layoffs across agencies including NOAA. Many are vital members of our community who do invaluable work. As we work to respond, here are a few AMS resources available to everyone who needs them: bit.ly/4kgQvK5

The GOP Budget Resolution that passed the House this week increases the debt limit from $36 trillion to $40 trillion, and spends enough $ to increase in the debt from $36 trillion to $56 trillion over the next 10 years. But yay for tax cuts! I’m the only Republican who voted no.

I am back at the US Capitol meeting with lawmakers from both sides of the aisle despite the news of the firings of 100s of meteorologists from the National Weather Service and NOAA. I’m going to continue to fight for our close-knit weather community. Everything NWS does matter!

Andy means a lot to tropical meteorology and his contributions to hurricane hunting & the HAFS model (among other things) have significantly improved our understanding of tropical cyclones. Consider donating if you can.
Hey. It’s been a minute. But my friend @AndyHazelton could use your help. Please consider supporting him and his family during this period of uncertainty. Thanks! gofund.me/20b1e25d

If you live in Florida, you know how valuable @AndyHazelton is, both as a forecaster and as someone willing to engage here during Hurricane season. I truly hope this decision gets a second look.
Morning all! I've been encouraged by the outpouring of support for all of us in NWS/NOAA. I wanted to specify a detail that I think is relevant from some conversations I've had. Most of us (at least at EMC) who were terminated were officially "probationary" because we are new federal employees, but have been working for NOAA in some capacity (usually on the contract or university side) for 5, 10, 15 years. So we're the group that has the unique combination of early career motivation/drive but also enough expertise to be quickly effective as we are promoted into new roles. This is not the group you'd get rid of if you wanted to make an organization more efficient - it's what you'd do if you want to destroy an organization. I'd like to assume the best and hope that's unintentional. Hopefully the value of what we do can be communicated effectively.

Much of my career was on the fed side and as a supervisor. The way this was handled – callous, cruel, and with zero discretion – to score political points is reprehensible. I'm incensed on behalf of those affected and stand with the wx enterprise in support of our fed colleagues.
Unfortunately I can confirm the rumors going around today since I received "the email"...I don't want to make any comments other than I am exploring legal options in a couple of avenues. I will probably be deactivating this account for a variety of reasons soon. I always advocate contacting representatives about the importance of the NWS/NOAA mission.

Andy is just one of countless NOAA meteorologists that I rely on, as a TV met, during hurricane season. Folks, forecasting extreme wx is a team effort & NOAA is the backbone. These mass layoffs will have a big impact when it counts. And it’s life changing for these fine folks.

🚨 We're hearing Trump and Musk plan to lay off half the Social Security workforce and shutter field offices across the country. This will mean the delay, disruption & denial of benefits - a back door cut! What an insult to hard-working Americans who earned their benefits. 🚨
