U.S.-funded support towards the response to the Ebola outbreak is saving lives in the DRC 🇨🇩. Through @UNICEF, 150 metric tons of critical water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and infection prevention and control supplies have been delivered to frontline health facilities in Bunia, enough to meet the immediate needs of approximately 100,000 people for six months. state.gov/releases/office-of…

⚽🥧❓ I’ve challenged Paraguay’s Ambassador to South Africa, Juan Manuel Livieres Ocampos, to a friendly wager ahead of the June 12 match between Team USA and Paraguay. If Paraguay wins, I’ll be sending him a homemade apple pie. If Team USA comes out on top, it’ll be my turn to discover a favorite Paraguayan dessert. May the best team—and the sweetest treat—win. #USwithSA #TeamUSA #FIFAWorldCup #SportsDiplomacy #Paraguay

Ambassador Jeffrey Bartos: The U.S. is deeply concerned about the ongoing impact of the Sudan crisis on the Sudanese people, as well as on the Central African Republic, Chad, and other neighboring states. We call on the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to agree to and comply with a humanitarian truce without preconditions; to allow full, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access to those in need; and to guarantee the safe passage of innocent civilians fleeing violence. @USUN

Honored to meet with Kenyan President Dr. William Ruto (@WilliamsRuto). We discussed the partnership between the United States and Kenya on a range of regional and security issues, as well as opportunities to expand U.S.-Kenyan commercial and investment opportunities. We discussed U.S.-Kenyan cooperation to respond to Ebola and I thanked President Ruto for his steadfast partnership. Both of our nations have vital roles to play in fighting this outbreak and protecting our populations. The United States has contributed over $200 million in direct support to the Ebola response, in addition to $350 million for Ebola response and other humanitarian assistance in the DRC, South Sudan, and Uganda, as part of our $1.8 billion contribution to UN OCHA. We also covered he critical importance of achieving a humanitarian truce in Sudan, followed by a permanent ceasefire. We emphasized that external actors must cease fueling the conflict through military support to the warring parties. We highlighted the announcement of the June 8 joint statement on the Sudan political track. This is an important document developed by a coalition of multilateral institutions – including the AU, IGAD, Arab League, EU, and UN - reaffirming the international commitment to a peaceful, democratic, and stable future for the country, as well as to sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

On Friday, June 5, the United States announced over $240 million in humanitarian and disaster response assistance to Catholic Relief Services (CRS). CRS has global network of local partners, ensuring that assistance reaches the most vulnerable populations efficiently and effectively. It was my pleasure to meet with CRS President and CEO Sean Callahan recently, where we discussed U.S. humanitarian assistance through his organization to crises in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, and across Africa. CRS has a demonstrated track record of excellent humanitarian service and is a natural partner of choice for global assistance.

Today, after the successful conclusion of the Quintet-hosted consultations with Sudanese political stakeholders, the U.S. is proud to join 12 partner countries and organizations in a joint statement on Sudan’s political track. Advancing an inclusive civilian-led political track is a critical element of achieving durable peace in Sudan, and we strongly support the Quintet’s important work to prepare a dialogue and establish a path for a broader transition. This statement builds on the important outcomes of the Berlin conference on Sudan in April, which brought together numerous countries and organizations to agree on guiding principles for a peaceful and durable resolution of Sudan’s conflict and secured $1.5 billion in humanitarian support. The U.S. will continue to work with our partners around the world and Sudanese stakeholders in the efforts to secure a humanitarian truce and sustained humanitarian access, to support an independent, inclusive, and transparent civilian-led transition.
