Replying to @abrahamcho
@abrahamcho on humility as related to one's social way of relating, of being in solidarity with the poor, not just an internal heart orientation. And, a nod towards how that may inform the "faith and work" movement and tendencies towards elitism in it. untilzion.com/post/the-outwa…

Php 2 says Jesus "humbled himself." If humility is 1st an inward attitude of self-regard, this would suggest Jesus was proud before. It can't mean that. But if humility is embracing humble circumstances & identifying with the low, then Jesus did exactly that. He humbled himself.

Years ago I heard a definition of humility that rocked my world. I haven't been able to unsee it since. What if we've misunderstood the Christian virtue of humility? What if it's not primarily about an inward posture of the heart? untilzion.com/post/the-outwa…

A *crucial* post by @justinadour on the tension created by two of our core values: "Instead of using a scalpel to remove cancerous aspects of Western theology, many are satisfied with using a sledgehammer on the whole theological project." untilzion.com/post/decolonia…

The kingdom of God is a manifestation of God’s steadfast love. Our response is neighborliness—which is an upside-down, power-inverting, margin-centering community marked by radical inclusion and the advancement of the common good.
Trying to pull together some thoughts that have been rattling around in my head. In particular, trying to highlight the crucial formative role that a genuinely upside-down, power-inverting, margin-centering community (i.e. the church) has for our vision of the gospel. Thoughts?

My new post is up at @UntilZion where I unpack this diagram a little bit more, in case anyone is interested. Hope it's helpful! It was fun for me to write and think through.

Humility (anav) in the OT is not primarily an inward posture of the heart. It has an earthy, outward look-and-feel. The "anavim" are the poor, afflicted, downtrodden. To be humble then is to be one who enters into & embraces the humble circumstances of the oppressed.
