UGW applauds Judge Scott for having the courage to rule on the constitutionality of an Utah statute. This is the role of the judiciary in our (hopefully) enduring system of checks and balances that defines American exceptionalism. #utpol
#BREAKING A judge has ruled that the Utah Fits All Scholarship, which critics call a voucher program, is unconstitutional. Judge Laura Scott ruled in favor of @myuea and others who argued that the program siphoned public money that was constitutionally earmarked for education. @abc4utah

UGW is still opposed to 2HB300, a solution in search of a problem. #utpol
Right now, Utah is one of few states that doesn’t require any form of voter ID when casting a ballot. H.B. 300 changes that. Utahns deserve to feel certain that their elections are secure, their votes are counted accurately, and their voices truly matter. We can keep the elements of our elections that Utahns love while bolstering election security, transparency, and integrity. H.B. 300 passed the House this afternoon and now moves to the Senate.

UGW supports #HB408 School Board Referendum Amendments by Rep @ShippRex. Government is either subject to referenda by the people or it is not. There’s no reason to have a special carve out for school boards. This is a good bill. #utpol #utleg

The wisdom of the founders was most evident in the system of checks and balances and three coequal branches of government. Today’s efforts by @POTUS and the #utleg branches to dismantle the others are a strike at the very foundation of American greatness. #utpol
A bill to create a committee of lawmakers who could put judicial retention recommendations on the ballot is moving forward despite questions over the separation of powers from the @UtahStateBar, the judiciary, and others. @abc4utah #utpol abc4.com/news/politics/insid…

UGW opposes #HB445 by @DougFiefia. This is another bill aimed at “fixing” a system of elections that’s not broken. This would #disenfranchise #Utah voters whose mail-in ballots are delayed by the post office (among other bad things). le.utah.gov/~2025/bills/stat… #utpol #utleg

#utleg proposes controversial bill that’s going to fix all the problems. Property claim that the bill is going to ruin everything and doesn’t really solve anything. Leg responds that the bill isn’t that big of deal and really won’t affect people’s lives. Then why run it??!

If you’re disappointed, then #veto it and send it back to the #utleg to get it right. It’s difficult to find sincerity here.
BREAKING: @GovCox has signed HB267, the public labor union bill, into law. However, the governor added he’s disappointed “the process did not ultimately deliver the compromise that at one point was on the table and that some stakeholders had accepted.” #utpol #utleg @KSL5TV

Court packing for me but not for thee. As with most things politically, it’s not the idea it principle, but who’s proposing it that matters. To quote POTUS: “It’s very sad.” #utpol @JeffersonMoss
Republican legislators are looking at potentially adding justices to the Utah Supreme Court and making it harder for all judges to keep their jobs by raising the bar in retention elections. sltrib.com/news/politics/202…

We’re very disappointed that the substitutes which were negotiated in good faith and would have been vast improvements were not adopted. We urge @GovCox to veto #HB267 and for the sponsor @jordanteuscher to go back to the table and work in good faith with the affected parties.
BREAKING: Senate PASSES the anti-collective bargaining bill for public unions. That's final legislative passage. It now goes to @GovCox's desk.

UGW eagerly supports HB87, because it addresses the problem without making boogeymen out of an entire group of people. This is the problem, not immigrants. #utpol @MatthewGwynn

Hopefully @GovCox will veto this if it makes it through the #utleg. UGW is opposed to any bill that makes voting harder without actually addressing the issues with the current system. #utpol
Will Utah require you to return your mail-in ballot *in person* and show ID? That's one of the proposals being run by the @utahhousereps. But Governor @SpencerjCox tells me that he thinks that defeats the purpose of vote-by-mail. FULL INTERVIEW on Inside Utah Politics on @abc4utah buff.ly/3WxMarP

UGW opposes #HB300 by Rep Burton. This will disproportionally affect rural Utahns making it harder to vote. Elections should be as secure as possible without disenfranchising citizens. This will lower voter participation without measurable impacts to election security. #utpol
“We know Utah voters want to receive their ballot in the mail and that will continue,” Rep. Jefferson Burton said. “However, the majority of Utahns, and of Americans, support a requirement to show photo ID to vote.” Via: @Deseret #utpol #utleg deseret.com/politics/2025/01…

This is unfortunate, this was a good bill. Odd that in Utah, it takes a democrat to remove the heavy hand of government. Isn’t that what conservatives used to claim to be?

UGW is vehemently opposed to #SB73 by @LincolnFillmore. This bill would make it unreasonably difficult and expensive to run a ballot initiative in Utah. Indeed, it would make it so ONLY well-funded groups could run initiatives. 1/2 #utpol le.utah.gov/~2025/bills/stat…

A provision in a bill that passed the Republican Senate today would mean that any future citizen ballot initiative would cost backers an extra $1.4 million. sltrib.com/news/politics/202…

In attempting to take power out of the hands of the people, #utleg leadership is causing the very issue they claim to want to avoid. This is all in retaliation for losing the #redistricting case and failing to make a good faith effort at #amendmentD. 2/2 #utpol
