This is more activist history than anything the Vanderbilt report discusses. Completely warping facts and abusing political reality in defense of a bygone neoliberal world order.
Applebaum: What binds Russia, China, Iran and North Korea is not religion or ideology. China is communist, Russia nationalist, Iran theocratic. What binds them is fear of liberal language: rights, rule of law, separation of powers and independent courts. 1/

Yeah, it's not like Cronenberg's THE BROOD, Lambert's PET SEMATARY, Lon Chaney's portrayal of the Wolf Man, De Palma's CARRIE, etc. circled the themes. The big problem with the grief-and-trauma discourse is that people treat the phenomenon as new within the genre.
Replying to @GwenLovesMovies
I actually think a lot of filmmakers are "unpacking all of this shit in their films" because they have to if they want to get funding to make anything, not because they actually want to add in a trauma/grief plot into every film they make. Horror didn't used to be like this...

I have fought the neocons and warmongers in Washington for more than 25 years. Throughout, they have tried to silence, discredit, slander, and cancel me. Only recently, however, have they tried to deport me. At least, that appears to have been the aim of a hit piece in Bari Weiss’s The Free Press, which claimed that Marco Rubio’s State Department was “investigating” me for allegedly seeking to “undermine the U.S.”—presumably because of my opposition to war with Iran. Yet just hours later, the State Department issued a statement to reporters clarifying that “the State Department has no plans to revoke the green card of Mr. Parsi at this time.” Nor did it provide any confirmation for the central premise of the Free Press story—that an investigation of me existed in the first place. So here’s what I think happened. Read the full piece on my Substack: tritaparsi.substack.com/p/so…

Defend Trita Parsi!
Friends, many of you have contacted me about the FreePress "story" and that I am set to be deported. I haven't had a chance to write, but will do so shortly on my Substack to explain what happened. Thank you all for all the support you have shown! tritaparsi.substack.com/

This is disgraceful. The Trump administration is targeting Trita Parsi for his outspoken advocacy against the war in Iran. Threatening critics with deportation is McCarthyism 101. We reject this blatant attempt to silence opposition to the war.
⭕️ The State Department has launched an investigation of Trita Parsi, co-founder of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and the National Iranian-American Council (NIAC), and could seek to deport him, according to U.S. officials and documents reviewed by The Free Press. Parsi, who holds a green card, is one of the most prominent U.S.-based critics of the war with Iran. He was born in Iran, grew up in Sweden, has lived in the United States for over 25 years. A Trump administration official said Secretary of State Marco Rubio was taking “a hard look” at anyone whose work “furthers” the agenda of U.S. adversaries, invoking a provision of federal immigration law allowing the secretary of state to personally determine that a noncitizen’s presence compromises a “compelling U.S. foreign policy interest”—the same authority Rubio used in the ongoing effort to deport Columbia University protest leader Mahmoud Khalil. Quincy’s CEO told staff and donors in April that the think tank was retaining an immigration lawyer and preparing a writ of habeas corpus “to have at the ready” if Parsi were suddenly detained. The outlet that broke this story, The Free Press, has repeatedly published articles that amplify official pressure on critics of Israel, U.S. wars, and aggressive foreign policy, contributing to a chilling effect intended to deter others from speaking out.

Forever grateful to the indefatigable @PeterBeinart and all others who have pushed back against these ridiculous attacks against me and other critics of the war!
More eloquently than almost anyone else in Washington, @tparsi warned that this war against Iran would be a catastrophe. His reward? The Trump administration is reportedly considering deporting him. This is how America makes itself both stupid and unfree. Anyone who cares about intelligent debate, freedom and basic decency must speak now.

Three days after publishing this pro Section 224 op-ed, the Washington Post STILL has not disclosed that the author is heavily invested in Israeli defense startups.
The Washington Post published an opinion piece defending Section 224 and US integration of Israeli military tech without disclosing that the author is the founder of 1948 Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in Israeli defense startups

I don't think serious film fans think Spielberg ruined movies. Issue is more w/ ppl who treat Spielberg as alpha & omega of cinematic history, obsessing exclusively over 80s/90s blockbusters, with a few 70s Hollywood touchstones like JAWS & STAR WARS thrown in for good measure.
"Spielberg ruined movies" is something you think when you're 20 and outgrow when you grow up.

With the Free Press trying to get @tparsi deported, now would be a great time for some mainstream publications to defend people who are speaking out against Trump's insane wars and/or making the obvious point that the U.S. is losing its asymmetric war with Iran

There are so many things to criticize Democrats over, but here you are slamming them for blocking unconstitutional spying on Americans. You absolutely suck at this.
As millions of Americans gather for large events and summer celebrations, Democrats just BLOCKED the FISA Section 702 national security statute, hampering our ability to detect foreign terrorist threats. This comes after Democrats shut down Homeland Security. This is a stunning and dangerous fact: Democrats are now willing to put petty politics over public safety.
Community note
House Democrats joined 19 Republicans in voting against a FISA 702 extension on June 11, 2026 (198-218), citing concerns over the DNI nominee and demands for warrant protections on U.S. persons' data. nbcnews.com/politics/trump…
