The first 2026 Atlantic hurricane season outlook was just issued by @philklotzbach and the team @CSUAtmosSci. Overall activity could be the lowest since 2015 if a supercharged El Niño emerges. April bookends are wide, however. My deep dive here: michaelrlowry.substack.com/p…

Beautiful tribute from @NOAA_HurrHunter who earlier this evening honored longtime radar scientist and researcher Peter Dodge who passed away in March 2023. His ashes were dropped in the eye of Category 5 Milton tonight – PETER DODGE HX SCI (1950-2023) 387TH PENNY

Great to have Kait Parker writing for Yale Climate Connections! Her first post discusses drought, which is #1 on my list of climate change impacts I’m most concerned about, and one that gets far too little attention. yaleclimateconnections.org/2… @WeatherKait

The Gulf of Mexico this week is the hottest it's been at any point in any year on record by a wide margin. Weekly averaged Gulf sea surface temperatures have never broken 87°F but this week topped 88°F, an astonishing 1.4°C (2.6°F) above the 1991-2020 average.

#Antarctic sea ice remains on its own this year compared to any other July in our satellite record. Keep in mind when looking at this graph that the y-axis interval is 1,000,000 km². This is a massive deviation from the previous record for the date. More: zacklabe.com/antarctic-sea-i…

July is often the calm before the proverbial storm heading into August, September, and October -- historically July sees fewer U.S. and Florida impacts from tropical storms and hurricanes than June and fewer "homegrown" systems (80% of total formations in June vs. ~50% in July).

Development odds now up to 70% with Invest 91L in the northeastern Gulf. Air Force Hurricane Hunters currently en route to investigate whether we have Tropical Depression #2 or Tropical Storm Arlene. Regardless, heavy rain potential for the Florida peninsula today and tomorrow.

Phenomenal and persistent warmth across most of the eastern U.S. so far in 2023, including in South Florida (map via @SERCC)
Including March 13, the average temperature in #Miami so far this year is a record-breaking 74.7°F; the old record was 73.5° and the average is 70.2°. The average *high* temperature of 82.6°F is completely smashing records and is 3 standard deviations above the mean!! [1/3]

Too many venues are not accessible for people with disabilities to be leaders, presenters, performers, etc. ADA compliant for audience only doesn’t cut it.
A theater’s lack of wheelchair accessibility forced Denver City Council member Chris Hinds to hoist himself onto a debate stage on Monday. “I felt like a circus monkey,” Hinds said. wapo.st/3Kl8uQh

Truly. @airfrance @AirFranceUS does not want people with disabilities on their flights. @Delta — this your partner?

Does @airfrance not want wheelchair users on their flights? Obviously! We’re a hassle. But this is my most kafkaesque experience yet:

Hi, @airfrance would you like to contact me about not allowing us to book a flight because of my daughter’s very small, 13kg manual wheelchair? Because I’m sure we are not the only ones who are experiencing this discrimination through your call center. @AirFranceUS

To clarify - they will allow us to book… for $1200 more.

This is the exact issue we are currently dealing with as well! @airfrance it seems you are discriminating against people with disabilities.
