In olden days people removed their hat to show that no weapon was concealed. This led to symbolic tipping of hat as mark of respect. Similarly, open palms showed no weapon being concealed. In army, this led to salute when you touch your open your palm to your head gear

Captain Ashutosh Kumar of the Madras Regiment is the Army officer killed in action fighting terrorist infiltrators at LoC Machil today. Deepest condolences to his family and the unit.

If you told my grandparents that the Israeli Air Force and Luftwaffe Commanders would be flying together. And that Israel would be fully welcomed into the Middle East by the UAE (and soon to be others), they would have been incredulous.
