New paper: "Large Language Models & Emergence: A Complex Systems Perspective" (D. Krakauer, J. Krakauer, M. Mitchell). We look at claims of "emergent capabilities" & "emergent intelligence" in LLMs from perspective of what emergence means in complexity science. ⬇️

I’ve been training neural nets for 30 years. There was never a day I didn’t wish I had more compute. Finding solutions to problems just means we can now solve bigger problems and that is very exciting! I am finding the hype followed by panic this month to be rather exaggerated. Please remain calm and centred, especially if you’re an AI builder under pressure from managers or investors. We can’t build AI safely when we easily fall prey to either hype or panic.
