The worst part of listening to @Spotify 's Peaceful Piano station while I work is that it thinks I am a student studying, so it keeps advertising Chegg. 😡 Now I'm just an angry, distracted professor instead of a peaceful, productive professor...

The situation for parents of kids under 5 is so untenable. People are spending weeks without childcare, and, for those who even can work from home, working while watching a toddler is not a thing. Sending love to everyone just trying to make it through. nytimes.com/2022/01/12/opini…

One week into the school year and my 7-year-old has already had her first COVID-19 exposure in her classroom😪. It's going to be an interesting year...
I loved speaking at #USCOTS21 this year about expanding opportunities for "underprepared" statistics students. After a year of burnout due to COVID, prepping for the talk helped remind me why I love my job! Video and slides here: causeweb.org/cause/uscots/us…

Two of my @CSUMB stats students are featured in this @AmstatNews article. I'm so proud of them and all the hard work our @csumbmathstat students have been putting in this semester! stattrak.amstat.org/2020/12/…

I just finished recording, editing, and posting my last video lecture of the semester. I think I might cry. (I'll let you guess if those are tears of sorrow or joy...)

At the end of each video lesson, I have my students submit a remaining question they have. And the questions are SO GOOD. It's made me realize how many good questions students had, but were were NOT asking, when I used to teach in person (a lifetime ago?).

It's not their fault! Asking questions in front of the whole class is intimidating; I hated raising my hand even in grad school! Brainstorming ways to promote question-asking when we are back in person. Keeping the lectures asynchronous is top of my list right now. #flippedclass

I’m excited to be highlighted in this @CSUMB article discussing my new NSF grant! Looking forward to improving #statistics and #datascience education through our work.
Good News Comes in Threes ✨ The pandemic has not stopped CSUMB’s mission to improve lives through education, with help from grants. Read about the three most recent grants: csumb.edu/news/good-news-com… #csumb #madeatcsumb

I have now declined 4 article reviews that in a normal semester, I would have happily said yes to. This is pandemic life with kids at home as an academic. One of the (smallest) ways tenure-track faculty are being affected on their paths to tenure.

Adjusting tenure expectations in light of COVID-19 isn't about lowering standards. It's about reinventing standards for the cohort of assistant professors doing the unanticipated labor of reinventing higher education.

Switched from Moodle to Canvas this fall. Interface looks great. But the Canvas quiz feature is slowly destroying me... why can't I do the most basic things that a professor could want??

I'm so pleased to announced my @NSF IUSE proposal (with @profposner, @TheDougW, Marjorie Bond, and April Kerby) has been funded! In the next three years, you can expect some fabulous surveys assessing #Statistics and #DataScience attitudes for students AND instructors!

Tear gassing peaceful protesters just to clear the way for a photo-op to wave a Bible in front of a church is an abhorrent, morally repugnant, cowardly act. I say that as a follower of Jesus, who stands with the downtrodden and marginalized. #BlackLivesMatter

It feels SO GOOD to have grades submitted after such a challenging semester. This week I'm finally getting some consulting work done and tying up loose ends on three different papers! 📊📈💪🏼

Today for kinder class, my daughter had to dress up as what she wants to be when she grows up. She chose “statistics professor” 😊💯 so of course I let her raid my closet. @AmstatNews @csumbmathstat

If I am going to get interrupted while working from home, this is certainly how I want to happen 😊
