Your weekend Pokémon Go walks might have unintentionally trained the next generation of military drone AI. Reports are surfacing about how computer vision data collected by millions of Pokémon Go players is being repurposed for defense technology. This process takes the spatial maps and physical world data points generated by gamers and uses them to refine the navigation and targeting systems used in military drones. The jump from a casual mobile game to sophisticated defense tech highlights a massive shift in how consumer data is utilized. The core of the issue lies in the massive volume of high quality spatial data gathered through the app. By encouraging players to scan physical landmarks and local terrain to create a detailed world map, the company effectively crowdsourced a database that is incredibly useful for training autonomous systems. These systems need to understand and navigate complex real world environments, and the data provided by unsuspecting players is the perfect training ground. This transition from casual gaming to military application exposes a massive gap in how we view digital privacy and consent. Most users agreed to terms of service to play a game about catching digital creatures, but they are now finding their contributions are helping build autonomous systems for the defense sector. As AI models require increasingly large datasets, the digital footprints left by everyday apps are becoming more valuable to governments and military contractors. The line between consumer entertainment and national security surveillance has officially vanished in the age of crowdsourced AI data. #AI #MilitaryAI #PokemonGo #DataEthics #Drones #TechPolicy

Organizations such as the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) and various digital rights activists have historically raised concerns that without a robust, independent data protection authority and clear transparency regarding the "back-end" processing of data, the digital census could infringe upon the fundamental right to privacy as recognized by the Supreme Court of India in the Justice K.S. Puttaswamy (Retd.) v. Union of India judgment. x.com/CensusIndia2027/status… Internet Freedom Foundation Statement on the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 Read our statement on the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023. The Internet Freedom Foundation is extremely disappointed by the version of the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 (DPDPB, 2023) that has been introduced in the Lok Sabha today. The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) had released the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022 (DPDPB, 2022) on November 18, 2022 for public consultation after the Data Protection Bill, 2021 was withdrawn by the Minister for Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw on August 3, 2022. The DPDPB, 2023, like its 2022 predecessor fails to account for concerns raised by civil society through years of consultations across different iterations of the bill in 2018, 2019 and 2021. The Supreme Court of India in Justice KS Puttaswamy vs Union of India, while stating that informational privacy is an important facet of the right to privacy under the fundamental right to life, emphasised that the Union Government should examine and put into place a robust regime for data protection. We believe that the DPDPB, 2023 falls woefully short of such ideals. It fails to address many data protection concerns and instead puts in place a regime to facilitate the data processing activities of state and private actors. Some of our main concerns with the DPDPB, 2023 include, but are not limited to: The further widening of exemptions granted to government instrumentalities that may facilitate increased state surveillance; The absence of clear provisions on various important issues which have been left to future executive rule-making; The amendment of the Right to Information Act, 2005 which will significantly weaken the historically progressive law; The level of executive control over the Data Protection Board; & The imposition of duties and penalties on Data Principals. When the DPDPB, 2022 was released for public consultation, we had stated that this version of the bill should be withdrawn due to its failure to satisfactorily protect the privacy of Indian citizens. The DPDPB, 2023 reiterates the shortcomings of the DPDPB, 2022 and fails to inculcate several of the meaningful recommendations that had been made during the consultation process, which were subsequently made public by the relevant stakeholders. We strongly urge the Union Government to address the numerous recurring problems with successive iterations that have been raised by civil society stakeholders. In its present form, the DPDPB, 2023 does not sufficiently safeguard the Right to Privacy and must not be enacted. There must be meaningful discussion and debate on the draft bill in the Parliament, including a referral to an appropriate committee, which may further seek public inputs in the course of its deliberations to re-architect the bill such that it protects citizens’ privacy from private entities as well as the state instrumentalities. internetfreedom.in/statement… #DigitalPrivacy #DataProtection #InternetFreedom #IFF #PrivacyRights #Census2027 #DataProtectionBill #JusticePuttaswamy #CivilLiberties #TransparencyInData #DigitalRights #FundamentalRights #PrivacyMatters #DataProcessing #GovernmentAccountability #DigitalCensus #HumanRights #TechForGood #DataEthics #PrivacyAdvocacy #digitalindia #5G #dataprotection @internetfreedom @amnesty @hrw @awakenindiamvmt #aadhar

Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi in the latest edition of #MannKiBaat highlighted that India is undertaking one of the most important national exercises - #Census2027, the world’s largest administrative exercise. 📱For the first time, data collection will be in digital mode, with enumerators using mobile apps to record details directly. 🌐 People can self-enumerate online through the official portal (se.census.gov.in) up to 15 days prior to the field visit and receive a unique Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) to share with the enumerator, saving time and effort. 🏘️Already, over 1.2 crore households have been listed in the ongoing first phase. 🔒 All information shared remains confidential and is secured with robust digital safeguards. 👉The Census is not just a government exercise; it is our collective responsibility. Every truthful response strengthens the foundation of the nation’s development. Let’s come together to make #Census2027 a resounding success. #Census2027 #जनगणना2027 #MannKiBaat #DigitalIndia @PMOIndia @HMOIndia @PIBHomeAffairs @PIB_India @MIB_India @DDNewslive @airnewsalerts

The word “global” in Global AI has carried an unspoken asterisk for too long. One that represents millions of people who speak languages rich in tone and history yet remain invisible to modern technology because they are not fully connected through smartphones or 5G networks. VoiceBridge by @equalyz_ai is redefining the architecture of inclusion. Offline-first by design, VoiceBridge ensures rural and low-connectivity communities have equal participation in shaping AI today. We’re moving voice data collection beyond smartphone apps and internet dependency into something far more accessible: basic mobile devices already in the hands of millions. Africa cannot wait for perfect infrastructure before it is included in the future of AI. We must build the reality that already exists today, and this is a simple truth we started from. By ethically sourcing AI-ready speech data from the moment of capture, we are not just building datasets; we are enabling voice-driven systems in healthcare, education, and banking that can truly recognise and respond to African voices. If the future of technology is voice, no one should have to change how they speak to be heard. @sos_children @RESCUE_EU @toladata @JacarandaHealth @DataKind @Relliswealthy @AfricaAIForum @AfricaAI_ @africalanguage @AfricaAIA @AfricaAI_Summit @Microsoft #EqualyzAI #VoiceBridge #SpeechAI #DigitalInclusion #AfricanTech #SovereignAI #LanguageJustice #DataEthics

#FormalMethods #HighAssurance #XAlgorithm #SoftwareEngineering #DataEthics #SocialGraph #Algoritmo

In the GenAI era, algorithms are everywhere and compute is accessible. So, what’s the real bottleneck? High-quality data. 💡 Next week, I am thrilled to take the stage at Digital Universities UK 2026 to dive into exactly this: Data Mining in Research, its Ethical Implications, and the Frontier. Right now, almost anyone can train an AI model. But because collecting and annotating data at scale is incredibly costly and time-consuming, we are seeing a dangerous rise in "cheap" data. This often means: 🚩 Relying too heavily on synthetic data generated by LLMs 🚩 Underpaying human annotators 🚩 Bypassing user consent and violating copyrights If we want sustainable progress in AI, we have to completely rethink our data collection and management ecosystem. I can't wait to share my vision during this panel and learn from the other brilliant minds at the conference. lnkd.in/eJ5ERVD6 @theeventsglobal #THEdigitalUK #DataEthics
