Excited for a new paper at Frontiers in Immunology. We present a first implementation of the sparse identification of non-linear dynamics (SINDy) on biological data of in vitro CAR T-cell killing of cancer cells to discover the underlying dynamics. 1/13 doi.org/10.3389/fimmu.2023.1…

Dear friends who write NSF GRFP rec letters, this year rec letters are due BEFORE the applications, so about 10 days earlier than normal on Oct. 11. Please don't let NSF's deadline change on rec letters screw over the applicants in your lives.

In April, I visited Frontier, the world's fastest supercomputer, in Tennessee. It's 35 times faster than Tianhe-2A, which was #1 in 2014, and 33,000 times faster than Earth Simulator, #1 in 2004. Here's my story on what they're doing with it. nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

Why are not all whales dead from cancer? A simple calculation reveals that all other things equal, an animal 1000 times larger than us should be a thousand times more prone to develop cancer. This is not the case. Why? Maths suggests an answer @cmaley royalsocietypublishing.org/d…

A lot of response to this cool post are saying it’s because whales don’t smoke or are not exposed to toxins. That’s wrong because in fact even for humans, ~2/3 of cancer is due to random errors during cell turnover and not due to environment. See: washingtonpost.com/news/to-y…

Understand the sacrifices that are so commonplace in this workforce, and realize that focusing on postdocs is only a fraction of the population. Research staff, adjuncts, visiting assistant professors, and many more comprise the temporarily employed and underpaid in higher ed.

Arizona's wildlife is really wild! 👀 Check out these awesome snaps of a bobcat perched atop a saguaro at Lost Dutchman State Park. 🌵 You might think "ouch" but bobcats are adept climbers with tough paw pads. 📸 P. Giebelhausen (closeup) and Ranger Hailey on a hike last winter
