NEW | Razan Khaira was running toward the Olympics. Israel turned her into one of Gazaโs amputees.
At just 24 years old, Palestinian runner Razan Khaira dreamed of representing Palestine on the world stage and raising its flag at the Olympics. Today, she is one of thousands of amputees injured by Israelโs genocide in Gaza.
On the night of November 19, 2023, Israeli airstrikes flattened two neighboring buildings beside her family home in Gaza City while nearly 60 displaced people were sheltering inside. Razan woke to chaos before realizing her leg had nearly been torn from her body.
โI looked at my foot and it was hanging by a single piece of skin,โ she recalled.
Before the genocide, Razan trained three days a week, competing in school races and local championships with the goal of becoming a professional runner, a dream that was wiped out by the occupation.
