A grotty day weatherwise in England's Midlands for Frank's visit to @GolfSutton and CM Chris Roberts. Alister MacKenzie's revised design adorns the clubhouse wall as well as his thoughts on what he hoped would be the final result. His plan was not fully executed but what is there is very special and will be better for the upcoming TLC. #afterisalwaysbetter

From Arthur Lees’ assistant at Sunningdale to one of Australia’s legendary, old school, club pros. The last survivor of the 1951 Open Championship at Portrush. What a life.

Diamond Springs - Mike Devries (2002) Got in a sub-3 hour walk in this AM! The course stands as a pillar for what affordable public golf can be. Single cut fairways and tees, fantastic topography usage, defined strategic angles. So simple, but oh so effective! Must-play in W MI.

The first edition of @GolfClubAtlas's very smart new periodical has arrived at HQ. Delighted to see both Blackwell and Fontainebleau included in the spotlight.

A 6 month old, endangered, Shy Albatross found himself a long way from home recently, and was taken in by local legends, Mosswood Wildlife. Unfortunately, the wind not strong enough to get him going today, but any albatross on course is a good one.

Royal Hague #81 World Top 100 Harry Colt - 1939 Private - Limited Public Tee Times Truly one of the most unique and wild golf courses in the world. Royal Hague is unbelievable. Built on some of the hilliest golf land I’ve ever seen, Royal Hague is a thrill ride from start to finish. Every hole makes you “wow” as you step to the tee. The opening tee shot sets the tone. You overlook the front nine and hammer a drive down a huge hill. You quickly realize you won’t have a flat golf hole all day. It’s a demanding course, the one up tees carry a 148 slope! But even facing 25 mph gusts it was playable and fair. (Though not a place you want to have a bad driving day.) The fairways slope in all directions with tons of internal contour. You get all kinds of lies and lots of blind shots, including some off the tee. This adds to the thrills. The course is full of strategy. You can take less than driver, you can try to cut off angles, you can try to catch speed slots. It an amazing combo of thrilling heroic golf and strategic. The greens have very bold surrounding contours, but few internal contours. So if you hit it on the level you won’t be having a lot of break. Putts can be made. Not by me, but they can be. Royal Hague is incredible. Truly world class and a golf course you won’t ever forget.

Utrecht de Pan #89/World Top 100 1932 - Harry Colt Private - Limited Public Tee Times If you were designing a golf course to enjoy every day for the rest of your life, de Pan would be a great model. It harkens to a different time. It’s a world Top 100, but it isn’t trying to wow you with over the top conditions or anything superfluous. It’s about golf the way nature would present it. Charming and tranquil is how I would describe the walk through the woods here. There are trees everywhere, but the course is very wide. The trees come in to play with very bad shots or when angles are challenged. The greens are amazing and the surrounds equally so. You can often play a low shot using the surrounds to get to green when out of position. The greens have plenty of slope allowing for some really fun shots into pins. The walk overall is mostly flat, but with tons of internal contour. You will have shots off of all kinds of lies and stances. The bunkering is minimal but perfectly used. The routing is fabulous, a fourball can walk it in 3 hours if the players know how to play a bit. Absolutely loved this walk and look forward to another chance. A wonderful day with a great host and friend and a perfect introduction to the Netherlands.

It was great to welcome Frank Pont of @cdpgolf1 back to Berkhamsted in May. Frank and his team continue to work with us on the authoring of our Course Master Plan which aims to preserve our courses' outstanding layout for years to come. We’re excited to see it coming together!

The glamourous life of a course architect. One minute you are marking out a new bunker, the next you're falling in head first. Frank after his small mishap today at St Cloud.
