Nobody who's made it has ever said "it was easier than I expected." It takes more than you think. More work. More focus. More consistency than they ever expected. The ones who didn't make it? They thought they were doing enough. They just underestimated what it actually takes. That's the difference. The willingness to do more than you think is 'enough'. For longer than you think is 'enough'. Every rep you half a$$. Every session you go through the motions. You're disrespecting every player who showed up when they didn't feel like it. You're disrespecting who did the work you decided wasn't worth doing. It's going to take more than you think. Way more. Not for a day, or a week, or a month. Six months. Twelve months. Three years. Send this to someone who needs to hear it. Save it for when you need it.

Tom Brady shares the advice that changed his career and his mindset. He was at Michigan - he was only getting 2 practice reps while the starter got 20. He was complaining to sports psychologist Greg Harden: "How can I ever get better? All these guys get all the reps and I only get 2." Greg's response changed everything: "Just go in there and focus with the 2 that you got and make them as perfect as you possibly can." Focus on what you can control. So that's what he did. "They'd put me in for those 2. Man, I'd sprint in there like it was Super Bowl 49. 'Let's go boys! Here we go! What play we got?'" "I did really well with those 2 'cause I brought enthusiasm, I brought some energy, and I had a little more confidence in myself." You don't get what you want in life - you get what you earn. It starts with showing up and earning it every single day. "It went from 2 reps to getting 4 reps because those 2 were pretty good. Then I had 4 good reps. Then I got 10 good reps." You can always try to lead the team in effort, attitude, and perspective because it takes no talent. Then he shared the mindset shift: "Focus on what you can control. Focus on what you're getting, not what anyone else is getting. Whenever you get an opportunity, you take advantage of it. You treat it like it's the Super Bowl." PLAYERS: Your coach shouldn't have to beg you to be unselfish, provide energy, have a good attitude, or give your best effort. Those are all things you can control. That is what a winning teammate brings to a team. Great teams have great teammates.

I often quip that the only class that prepared me for business ownership was playing college baseball. Augie Garrido perfectly sums up why here, and his words encapsulate why I’ve decided to devote my life to helping kids play at the next level. “Having the courage to act on your own ideas and become who you want to become.”

Geno Auriemma shares how he explains success to his players and why showing up isn't enough. "If you go to class and you do average work, you're gonna get a C. That's why it's called average." "If you want a B, you have to do more work. If you want an A, you have to do even more work and you have to give up stuff." You get what you earn in life. "You have to sacrifice. Maybe you can't do all the things that everybody else does." It means if you want more then you have to be willing to do more. "If you're just happy getting Bs all your life, there's nothing wrong with that either. But you're never gonna get the satisfaction of what it feels like to get an A." Then he connected it to basketball: "If you just wanna be average, then you do average work. If you wanna be a little bit above average then you do a little more work." "If you wanna get As in basketball, then you gotta do stuff that other people aren't willing to do - especially if you have the talent like we do. We have talent." It means bring a mindset of excellence to everything that you do. Excellence isn't the goal - it's the standard you set. Then he called out the entitlement problem: "Some of these younger guys coming out of high school, man, they wanna show up and go, 'I'm here. Where's my 3.7?'" "Like my father used to say, 'I got your 3.7 right here.'" Showing up doesn't earn you anything. Doing the work does. You get the grade you earn - in school, in basketball, and in life.
