The super rich have politicians in their pockets. They ensure that their will is done in the legislatures & bureaucracies that govern our lives. It’s time we drop the divides that have us conquered & build from People Power. When COPE wins big in October thats just what we’ll do.

Instead of working for the people, our governments are working for the super rich, abandoning seniors, renters, students, disabled ppl, women & children fleeing abuse, the working class. We’re told immigrants, homeless ppl, & international students are the problem. It’s a lie.

Unquenchable thirst for profit causes this. Housing being valued for max investment yields instead of human habitation causes this. The super rich are scapegoating immigrants, calling people lazy, & their minions parrot the same.
At 87 years old, Richmond senior Lance Evans says he spends his days at the library and his nights trying to sleep in Tim Hortons because he has nowhere else to go. His story shines a light on a growing crisis facing elderly Canadians, as rising housing costs, long waitlists, and a shortage of care options leave some seniors struggling to find even the most basic security and shelter.

What does it say about our system that any hope of adequate living as an elder depends on having a windfall in home equity? It’s a disgrace to abandon people like this while extremists continue to criminalize homelessness.
Opinion: Seniors are the largest, fastest-growing homeless population in Canada. It’s a collective shame upon our country theglobeandmail.com/opinion/…

Whether you rent or own, you deserve the chance to stay in the city you call home. This week, we cut the ribbon on dozens of apartments in Morningside Heights that have been transformed into permanently affordable co-ops. Working class New Yorkers who have spent decades here will finally have the opportunity to own their homes, and future residents will be able to buy. New York should belong to the people who make it run.

FICTION: @PeterMeiszner claimed the Vision Zero plan would lower the speed on "streets like Boundary Rd, Clark, Knight St." FACT: The report clearly references streets with "high pedestrian activity" and "busy shopping streets." Did Peter even read the report before gutting it?

WRONG and very dishonest. The plan was to reduce speeds on *select* commercial arterials with high pedestrian volume and crash history. Think streets like Denman, Main, Commercial Drive. This is where 93% of fatalities occur. ABC chose speed over human life. #publicsafety
Yesterday, ABC voted to keep Vancouver moving. While the non-ABC parties on Council wanted to lower speed limits on major arterial roads to 30 km/h and 40 km/h, ABC chose to stand with commuters and residents. Speed limits must be driven by common sense, not ideology. Let's keep Vancouver moving forward.

UPDATE: Council voted to direct staff to investigate adding 4 more locations where device would be available - 5X original plan. Thanks to a motion by @Lucyincanada, supported by @seanorr & slightly amended by @MikeKlassen. Good work all. Make it happen. x.com/mssinenomine/status/20…

Ultimately these devices should exist as an option for marking your ballot at every polling station. For this election I'd be satisfied with a couple in convenient polling locations in every neighbourhood. ctvnews.ca/vancouver/article…

NEW from City Hall: In the GVRD, 100 people die every year from fatal car accidents. Today staff brought a report to bring a moderate handful of tweaks to reduce injuries and save lives in the city. ABC amended it to make the streets less safe.

In case anyone is wondering, these super 'scary' machines that allow disabled people who otherwise would not be able to, to cast a secret ballot during the election cost $1500. That's it. They vote on whether to support voter suppression & reduce accessibility today.
I wrote about how City of Vancouver almost celebrated National Accessibility Week by voting to reduce voter accessibility in upcoming election. The motion wasn't defeated. The agenda item was just moved to June 9th. Voter Suppression in Vancouver Election open.substack.com/pub/mssine…

So last week Cllr @seanorr tabled a motion to amend the TRPP so that it would apply to tenants being evicted when a hotel is replacing their homes. Currently, the TRPP does not apply because you can't offer tenants a hotel room to move back to. 🧵

A person working full-time earning minimum wage can afford $876/month on rent at 30% of gross income. Yet the market doesn’t supply housing at that rate, & at the current rate, never will. We need all levels of govt focused on lasting solutions to this problem.
On June 1, 2026, BC's minimum wage will go up to $18.25 an hour. Increases help workers keep up with the cost of everyday essentials and are automatically linked with the rate of inflation. Learn more: gov.bc.ca/MinimumWage

The CMHC average rent for a 1 bedroom in Vancouver is $1805/mo. That means a full time minimum wage worker would need to pay 61% of their pre-tax income to afford one.
B.C.’s minimum wage just increased today. 💵 Starting today June 1st, the minimum wage is now $18.25 an hour. About 141,000 workers in B.C. currently earn minimum wage. The increase is now tied to inflation, giving workers regular raises and businesses more time to plan.

“Vancouver needs to a deeper, richer understanding appreciation of accessibility. Accessibility can be innovative creative. But we need a very different approach than the one currently employed by the City.” Accessibility is a human right, we need leadership that gets that.
