3 years ago, 7-year-old Suresh Mandi, a Bengali Hindu child from Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal, was diagnosed with blood cancer. Since then, life has changed completely. To save their son, the family shifted to Bhubaneswar for treatment and gradually lost everything they had. Today, they live in a slum and struggle to survive. Despite his own hardships, Suresh’s father works as a driver transporting cancer patients at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, helping others fight the same disease while desperately trying to save his own child. Recent reports showing MRD <0.01% have brought hope, but the financial burden has devastated the family. One of their biggest problems is that Suresh currently does not have access to proper health card benefits, making treatment and medicines extremely difficult to afford. No 7-year-old should have to fight cancer and poverty at the same time. Future of TMC appears uncertain, particularly in the context of leadership succession. Mamta is 71 years old and she continues to dominate both the party and West Bengal’s political landscape. Given Bengal’s historical voting patterns and the absence of a strong anti-incumbency wave, a change of government in the state does not seem likely in the immediate future, potentially for another decade or more. A similar continuity could also persist at the national level. However, the central concern for TMC is the lack of a credible second line of leadership. The party remains heavily dependent on Mamata Banerjee’s personal authority and political charisma. Unlike cadre-based parties with institutional leadership structures, TMC has not yet produced a widely accepted successor capable of commanding both organizational control and public appeal. This raises serious questions about the party’s long-term sustainability after Mamata Banerjee gradually withdraws from active politics. At present, TMC holds significant parliamentary strength, with around 30 Lok Sabha MPs and 13 Rajya Sabha MPs. Yet, in Indian politics, perceptions of political momentum matter greatly. If the party begins to appear vulnerable or directionless in the post-Mamata era, the possibility of defections cannot be ruled out. BJP which has consistently sought to expand its footprint in West Bengal, could emerge as the primary beneficiary of such instability. In a scenario where TMC weakens organizationally, a substantial number of its MPs and regional leaders may choose to align with the BJP for political survival and future prospects. My take is that a significant section of TMC’s Lok Sabha MPs (around 20) could eventually migrate to the BJP if the party’s internal cohesion declines.
