A wild sight off the coast of Assateague State Park!
Park technician Will Gabeler captured these photos while working on the dune, getting a front row view of a waterspout churning up the ocean. The funnel was spinning offshore and moving away from land, so there was no danger of it coming ashore.
A waterspout is a rapidly rotating column of air and water spray that forms over the water, connecting a dark convective cloud, usually cumulus or cumulonimbus, to the surface. It looks like a twisting funnel, similar to a tornado, but is typically less intense and short lived.
Nature was putting on a show today! 🌊🌪️
