In case you missed it, here’s our take on modesty culture. We name four problems: made women responsible for male lust, hyperfocus on legalistic rules, placed a heavy yoke on teens already struggling with body image and hello it sexualized children. wheredowegopod.com/76

If you woke up this AM wondering how US just elected man who supported an insurrection & had a sexual assault verdict against him, parsing voting trends won't offer a satisfying explanation. This is a representative system not a democracy. You have to look further upstream.

Settling is more important than keeping students safe from alleged sexual predators. Indeed, it’s increasingly difficult to deny that this is simply business as usual for too many Christian institutions. religionnews.com/2024/10/04/…

My first obituary for the @nytimes — Paul Pressler, disgraced leader in the Southern Baptist Convention, has died at 94. Once revered, as many as seven men accused him of sex abuse nytimes.com/2024/06/16/obitu… Thanks to @RobertDownen_ @baptist_news for their earlier news reporting

I understand that the SBC is debating the place and process for affirming the Nicene Creed in its doctrinal affirmations. But ... if you cannot affirm the Creed or if you reject it, then you're outside historical Christianity, and you belong in the same category as Unitarians, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Episcopalians.

I'll be in Indianapolis next week covering the Southern Baptist Convention. If you're a messenger: DMs open, email in bio. (Probably won't be tweeting much!)

A couple of things about the SBC and abuse. SBC leaders have long known that abuse was a problem in churches but sought to downplay how often it occurred and stonewall any national attempts to deal with us. This was in large part to protect the SBC's donations and assets.

I read The Handmaids Tale in 11th grade. Nearly every student in class was a youth group kid (this was Fayetteville, AR). Our teacher was brilliant, respectful, and agnostic. For the weeks we spent on this book, he’d pull out his (dog eared) Bible, take us to 1 Tim. to wrestle ..

with the actual text in the Bible even as we wrestled with the world Offred inhabited. It gave us Christian kids the opportunity to confront our faith. That was 25 years ago. I’m still a Christian, and I’ll always be grateful for that class and that book.

Remember to defend the convicted felon who paid hush money to the woman with whom he had an adulterous affair or else our kids might be exposed to social disorder and sexual immorality.

Yall Im so uncomfortable with the unavoidable number of celebrities taking ozempic (or the like) & then going on press tours about their weight loss, praising each other’s smaller bodies as if that’s been the goal this whole time. Instead of true body liberation & love.

There will never be a Protestant denomination in American history that was more geographically disbursed than the United Methodist Church. Before the Schism, you could find a UMC congregation in 95% of all counties in the country.

In 2019, I first encountered Circle of Hope, a radical group of some six hundred heavily-inked young Jesus followers, on a street corner in Kensington, the Philadelphia neighborhood hit hardest by the opioid crisis. (1/4)

This is an accurate picture of what healthcare is like for us in Melbourne. I feel grateful everyday to live here.
After 37 years as a solid American, I've left the U.S. My wife and I have been living in her home town of Melbourne, Australia since January, shortly before our baby was born. We'd always talked about doing it someday, but something happened last year that forced our hand. 1/ 🧵

We need to have a serious conversation about this being characterized as spousal betrayal instead of child sexual abuse by those with platform and celebrity.
Grateful for Logan’s courage. He, and the other victims of Aaron Ivey’s sexual abuse, should be where we focus our public attention right now. This is not just a story of an unfaithful spouse (which is the current narrative) this is the story of an alleged serial predator

$99 a ticket for a one-day Christian conference, or $5000 a ticket for the same one-day Christian conference with the addition of backstage access and group dinner & breakfast with the main host. I'm just going to say it. This is appalling.
