Medicine is a state of continuous learning. It starts when you enter medical school and continues till you retire. In this long period, the 3 years of residency are the most crucial. The amount of knowledge you gain in these 3 years cannot be equalled by any other period. When we chose our program (many decades ago), the chief criterion was the place with the best teachers/ "best opportunity to learn". Stipends, geography, duty hours etc were secondary. Even if not entirely to our satisfaction, these criteria rarely determined our choice. After all, it was only for 2-3 years.
