Its been like a decade but I still wake up some days (like today) and look around at the web we've built and can't believe we effectively lost RSS. To check if my fav tech writers have content I now have to check multiple sites with a non-linear timeline and no inbox.

Many executives fail to understand why tech companies are bloated. They are bloated because everything is held together with duck tape and "task force" teams. And it's due to gross lack of funding when it comes to removing complexity and technical debt.

We celebrate the life of Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek actor, trailblazer, and role model, who symbolized to so many what was possible. She partnered with us to recruit some of the first women and minority astronauts, and inspired generations to reach for the stars.

Another common question I’m answering working with scaling tech companies is… Q. What’s the worst leadership advice you’ve heard? A. By far the worst is “Hire great people and get out of their way”. Let me explain… 🧵 (1/32)

Employment update: After 10 years, I am moving on from being employed at @nytimes. It was journey of a lifetime. I wanted to say a thanks to all who trusted me immense responsibility and helped me grow along the way. I'll be taking some time off before I start a new gig.

If your @awscloud Solutions Architect doesn't recommend moving external DNS to a third party provider in the wake of the recent us-east-1 control plane revelations, they are not acting in your best interests.

SLO's seem simple but @el_bhs explains very simply as to why they aren't as simple as it sounds. Architectures are complex and often engineers are several degrees removed from the user experience. SLO's need to be about the user experience. Great thread!

0/ In recent years, SLOs have graduated from being an “SRE 201” advanced topic to an outright buzzword. But despite their promise, SLO deployments today are messy and often unsuccessful. Why? And what can we do about it? Thread: 👇

Reminds me of how @durple and i would talk about Reliability being a feature of your product. PMs, passing this off as an “eng prob” risks our ability to deliver on our customers’ expectations of our product.
I've had this blog post rolling around in my head for a long time. But let's talk about how reliability is not an engineering metric. firehydrant.io/blog/reliabil…

The only way out of the hiring mess is to pay more, retain more and grow the people to fit the shoes internally more. There is no other way around it, those not willing to do it will just not hire and will eventually bleed out.

Here's a memo to everyone talking, writing or interviewing me or anyone else about "multi cloud strategy": it is NOT the way to fix your reliability problems. People talk like there's some magical pixie dust: sprinkle on clouds, get ✨resilience✨!

This is an excellent thread. Leadership and people management isn't just about correcting everything you felt was wrong when you were and individual contributor. It is about creating a culture of accountability around you as well.
Because there are so many poorly trained, poorly chosen, power-hungry micro-managing engineering managers in tech, it seems that to avoid that some folks over-correct.

This is a mess. I don't think anybody is really focused on the problem brewing in tech around hiring and retention. But I think it's pretty bad. theregister.com/2021/09/07/h…
